What Are We Really Afraid Of?

In some sci-fi and horror movies I wonder-- What are we really afraid of? If you know they are apt to kill you if they catch you-- that's one thing. But many times the only thing that makes the protagonist scary is only that they look different than us. It's that unknown factor that scares us. Take the Slender man for instance. What is so scary about him? His heighth or that he has these long fingers? What is it really that we are afraid of? The picture is from AI Celeste Fantasy.

I get scared of vampires since they show their teeth when they are about to bite the necks of their victims.

I wish I'd meet up with a real one that would turn me.

Haha, those teeth definitely make vampires look more threatening! I think it's the moment they reveal their intentions that makes them especially creepy.

In this crazy world I am not afraid of anything anymore as long as I can stay inside and do my work and keep away from the rest of the world,

I can understand wanting to stay in your own space and enjoy your work in peace. Sometimes the outside world gives us enough reasons to value a quiet life at home.

That sounds like my thought on it exactly.

I don't get afraid of slender men, or killers, or those murdering horror movies. But show me something similar to The Ring! A creepy lady coming out of the tv! Who wouldn't be afraid of that?

Yes, that is so true. I don't understand why some are so freaked out by ones like Slender man.

I think a lot of the fear comes from not knowing what to expect. Something unfamiliar can seem frightening simply because we cannot understand its intentions. That uncertainty is often scarier than its appearance alone.
