The 1976 horror film “Burnt Offerings” was scary because it had some kind of evil possessive spirit that had learned to renew itself through choosing one person to embody. The film never gained too much popularity, but one thing I know is that it included one of my favorite actresses, Bette Davis. The one thing I have learned about scary films with Bette is that when Bette screams, something really terrible and scary is about to happen. This film reflects on the themes of possession and the supernatural, culminating in a frightful climax. It is worth taking a look at, and believe me, the ending will really chill you.
The story revolves around a family: Ben Rolf (Oliver Redd), his wife Marian (Karen Black), and their 12-year-old son Davey. They rent a large house for the summer from a very strange brother and sister Arnold Allardyce (Burgess Meredith) and Roz Allardyce (Eileen Heckart). The family takes along Aunt Elizabeth (Bette Davis), and when they arrive at the mansion, the key has been left for them. The moment they step into the house, their troubles begin.
Oh, yes, and to really get you hooked on this film, you will get the answer to this question by watching the film. Why would a brother and sister go away, leaving the couple renting the house to take care of their invalid mother in an upstairs bedroom?
