Good evening, friends!
Today, in the kitchen, while I was doing the dishes, I started to "sing" a French song I had learned when I was 3 years old. And, of course, I had forgotten half of the lyrics. So, after I left the dishes to be dried by my guardian angel, I asked YouTube if it knew the song.
And as it happened not only did I find out about the lyrics but also that the author had written it thinking about Queen Marie Antoinette and that he had sang it on his way to the guillotine.
I often wonder about the big amount of songs that I learned as a child and that were not for children at all. And we sang tthem and played while singing not knowing at all about the political implications some of them had.
Do you have such songs in your country?

Songs and tales for children are full of violence.

@marguicha - You are right, look at all those tales from the Brothers Grimm. They can give nightmares.

@LadyDuck I love them BECAUSE they can give nightmares
I wrote a book of short stories years ago using the plots of those tales but turning them into something else.

Fairy tales are also terrible. Little Red Riding Hood has a version in which the wolf eats the granny and the granddaughter and the saviour has to cut up the wolf´s belly to get them out.

Wow how interesting what this song was actually about and when it was written. Definitely not something you expected after learning it at such a young age. There was a song my mother sung when I was a teen and I enjoyed that kind of had that message “Skip a rope”

I remember one of the first songs I checked online. I knew Jambalaya and sang it in the shower but did not know the meaning. I even learnt there about cooking.

Tales are also full of violence. Just think about Cinderella or Snow White

Yeah we do have some traditional or local song but people don't really understand the meaning. They thing the song is for all age but it is not. For example a popular sing from west Sumatra entitled "ayam den lapeh" it is about broken love song but people think it is a funny song for all just because of the music is cheerful

As a child my father had the say to the songs I listened to. He bought me nursery rhyme cassette tapes and the Chipmunks Christmas album.
Those were the songs I used to sing as a child. All children's songs and all were in English.
So I never really have that kind of song that weren't for children's.
