One of many free negroes who lived in New Orleans she was a herbalist, hairdresser, voodoo practitioner, and spirit guide. In 1830s New Orleans she was called upon many times to free the guilty from jail, the condemned from hanging. She was continuously successful.
After her death in 1881 there were many sightings of her around the city. Her grave is one of the most visited in America.

You know what, we have a fictitious character here called Maria Labu. Don't know if she was real or fictitious actually. But since I was a kid I have heard of her. According to the people I heard the story from, she was an "Aswang," a shape-shifting malevolent monster who eats people. They look like real humans but they could transform into a dog, a bird, etc. They victimized young children and pregnant women, eating the baby in their womb.

There was a punk band who tried to steal her body after a show in New Orleans one night. I think it was the Misfits. There was a successful country song about her, written by Shel Silverstein and sung by Bobby Bare.

I would love to visit it. I would protect myself first of course.
