Happy Friday, everyone! Well, except for you who are already celebrating Saturday.
It’s time to continue the journey through Los Angeles in song. Today is a song that I’ve used before, which should indicate how much I like it.
#9: Sausalito Summernight - Diesel
I’m thankful that I’ve never had a car THIS bad, but I did have one that was close. It was a 1976 Ford Granada, and it lived up to the FORD acronym: Fix Or Repair Daily. It died, thank God, on a car lot in Virginia Beach. I got a 1981 Chevette in its place, which turned out to be one of the best cars I ever owned.
Now, Diesel is a Dutch band, so how they managed to accurately describe the woes of an American Motors Corporation (AMC) vehicle is beyond me.
Actually, Ramblers were considered pretty good cars, but by the 70s they were gone in favor of the Gremlin and the Pacer. Take one look at a photo of a Pacer and you’ll understand why AMC went out of business.
When I first heard this song I thought it was Steve Miller (and I’ve read enough comments to prove I wasn’t the only one who thought that). I discovered quickly what an insult to Diesel that was, given that this is infinitely better than anything Miller was doing in the 80s.
This was their only international hit, and it’s a fun one that I still enjoy listening to. But then, I’ve never been to Sausalito.

Recorded by Diesel
From Watts in a Tank, 1981
L.A. LYRICS:
Another mile or two to Frisco, 200 gallons from L.A.

Oh yeah, good rocker and pretty funny (“the engine’s thumpin’ like a disco, we ought to dump her in the Bay”).

Almost like Chuck Berry’s “Promised Land” but just from L.A. to San Francisco.

There was a lot of diverse music in that part of the 80s. I think most people just remember Michael Jackson.

Well, I didn’t know the name of either the song or the artist. I definitely recognized it and even knew the lyrics. Hubby, however, did not know either so I win

I’ll give you two points because who remembers the names of 99% of the one-hit wonders?

Not to be confused with Vin Diesel.

Haven’t heard Vin sing, and I’m not too sure I want to.

Steve is probable envious that he didn’t do this, given the garbage he put out in the 80s.
