Oops, it was supposed to be the Los Angeles song first today. Sorry, I already had the Hollywood song loaded. When you see who recorded it, you’ll understand why.
I know John Roberts has heard this song. As for the rest of you, probably not.
#7: Hollywood - Boz Scaggs
John and I bear the distinction of being the only two people who saw the movie FM, or maybe who will admit to seeing it. And, coincidentally enough, we saw it for the same reason: the Linda Ronstadt concert footage. Thankfully, today you can see that footage on YouTube without having to deal with the horrors of a movie that co-star Martin Mull lamented “looked like it was edited with a blowtorch.” (The same can be said of the clip of Jimmy Buffett singing “Livingston Saturday Night”: watch the clip on YouTube, and skip looking for this movie!)
So what does that have to do with this song? When Jeff Dugan (played by actor Michael Brandon, who, like everyone else in the film, was wasted talent-wise) slides into the studio right on time, the song he cues up and plays is…THIS ONE!
This album was the follow-up to Boz Scaggs’ highly acclaimed Silk Degrees; and, like so many follow-ups to the “big selling classic album” in the 70s, it wasn’t nearly as good. Scaggs rebounded fabulously with Middle Man in 1980. This is not a bad album (this is the one about which Rolling Stone famously quipped, “Boz Scaggs is a little like sex and rock and roll: when he’s good, he’s great, and when he’s bad, he’s not all that bad”), but it was sandwiched between two career-highlight albums.
Anyway, here’s another tribute to movie city. Dance your heart out.

You sure there’s not an uncle name of Barrymore?

But did you go so far as to get the FM vinyl soundtrack upon release?

Oh heck no. Most of the songs I already had the album versions of, and the ones that I didn’t like were definitely not worth buying the soundtrack for. And, you have to remember, that was when album prices jumped all the way up to eight bucks!

Oh you poor thing. The things we do for music love, huh? So there are three of us who’ll admit to having seen it.

@FourWalls - Being an aspiring radio personality at the time, I had high hopes for it, especially after hearing the soundtrack.

I’m definitely out of the loop on this one. Never heard of the movie or the song! Duh, Marie!

The movie is something that belongs on Rifftrax, except I don’t think even they stoop that low for bad movies. Boz music is great, anytime, anywhere.

It’s one thing that stuck with me more than anything in the actual movie.

A different kind of music and sounds.
Not everyone might enjoy it but a die hard music lover would.

That was a strange era, people bought albums by people they’d never heard of before, then when the follow-up was too different they didn’t like it or when it was too similar they didn’t like it.

Neither one of us saw that movie. We know who Boz Scaggs is but we didn't know this song.
