I always thought that today (November 1) was Dia de los Muertos but I just saw on the news that there was a huge parade in Mexico City yesterday. According to Wikipedia it can be celebrated any time between October 31 and November 6 depending on the region of Mexico that you are in.
The whole idea is to remember and honor those family members and friends who have passed. People create altars and put favorite foods and drinks on them. They visit graves to leave tributes. Apparently there are parades as well. Just learned that this morning.
People paint their faces and dress up for Dia de los Muertos. I absolutely love it. One of our favorite restaurants in Cozumel--La Choza--has murals of them all around the place. I have a magnet on my fridge from there that has an image of it. Some people might find the painted faces creepy but I think they are very cool. I also love the idea of honoring those who have passed each year.

My mom’s family did that on Memorial Day (sans altar, of course). They’d decorate everyone’s graves. I remember one year my grandma decorated my Papaw’s graves, and the arrangement she made got stolen. I think there must be a special place in hell for those that steal off of graves. She thought it was a roadside stand down the street that sold flower and grave arrangements.
