The date palm is a type of palm tree that produces edible fruit. Although its exact origin is unknown due to its long history of cultivation, it is likely native to the region surrounding the Persian Gulf. Its fruit serves as a staple food in the Middle East and North Africa. Today, date palms are cultivated in many regions beyond the Middle East. The fruit is exceptionally sweet, owing to its high sugar content, and it has a long shelf life. In Indonesia, dates are frequently consumed to break the fast during the month of Ramadan. In Indonesia it is called "kurma".
