I sometimes use my myLot payments to make a donation to ACE (Animal Care in Egypt). I’ve written about them before. It is a UK-funded charity based in Luxor. There are wash bays for equines which are well used. Egyptian nationals can have their animals treated for free by qualified veterinarians.
Great efforts are made to educate owners in how to better care for their creatures. Horses and donkeys have a particularly hard time in Egypt but cats and dogs are very popular as pets.
Most days, I check out their Facebook page and I have always wondered the significance of the markings on the whiteboard in the background. A few days ago, they posted a photo of the board and explained the markings.
I don’t know what the ‘20’ and ‘26’ mean but the four columns from left to right give the number of ‘dogs castrated’, ‘dogs spayed’, ‘cats castrated’ and ‘cats spayed’. The number of cats neutered, in particular, is pretty impressive. That's surely going a long way to preventing unwanted kittens.
The operations are free. Their culture prevents them from gelding stallions so many of the equine injuries are due to animals fighting. I don’t know why it’s okay to neuter cats and dogs but not equines. Maybe one day I’ll ask them.
