I'd like to ask if you have any advice on how to improve english skills? I think english is a very important language and I also like it very much so I want to be as good a somehow possible in it. My english is not that bad but I want to improve it, especially speaking / pronouncing words correctly. Do you have any tips on how to master a language? Are you yourself following certain methods you want to share? Thanks a lot in advance :)

I think, you should buy a good dictionary, first which not only gives you the meaning but also the right pronounciation of each word. Mingle with people who speak english well. Take a course or classroom type of teaching to get your diction and accent. See progams like news and other TV programs which stress on proper use of the english language.

I agree news is a good program to learn the pronounciation and practice listening skill. Not only that, but news also broaden your horizon. It's like to hit 2 birds with one stone!

I am still attending school and chose there to attend the 'intensive course' of english but my other classmates' pronounciation is probably even worse than mine so it's not helping me a lot in this way as I am constantly surrounded by wrong pronounced words =/. I already own the Oxford Advanced Lerner Dictionary, but thanks anyway for your advice!

Achtung! Achtung! :) your English is good! Well these tips maybe useful for you and the other learners. You can improve your pronounciation by listening to your favorite English song. Try to sing it along until the words you pronounce sound exactly like how the singer prononces them. Or watch movies and leave the english subtitle on, listen carefully to the dialogue. Cheers!

I am very good at the english language. One way to improve the language is to speak to those who are well spoken and have the correct voice and accent. I love french and I am dying to speak french. But i am still at basics.

Start reading good books, especially if you want to improve you communications, you have to read lot of novels. By reading novels you will improve the way you talk, since novels goes by normal communications. I have improved my communication by reading lot of novels, lot of books and just talk to my friends even if Iam wrong. You should just talk even if you feel it is wrong.

I tell you what I do: - I read online and paper magazines, and when I find a word I don't know I search it on a dictionary and write it down on the paper magazine or in a file. You can use Wordweb, a freeware dictionary. - I watch english or american movies with subtitles. BSPlayer is very useful because it allows to delay subtitles on the fly; sometimes I delay the subtitles just one second and try to understand without reading them before. Two very good sites to search for subtitles are divxsubtitles.net and www.podnapisi.net. To synchronize subtitles (when they have wrong FPS or constant delays) I use Subtitle Workshop. - I exercise thinking and talking in english while I'm driving; for instance, I do a navigator to myself, telling the next curves and intersections while I'm going to work; I noticed that day by day I find new ways of telling the same things and I catch some errors I was previously doing.

Hey Chizue! As a former English teacher, I can recommend several ways you can improve your language skills. Though it may seem a bit juvenile, Hooked on Phonics is excellent for prounciation, combining pictures and sounds, thereby making it easier to remember what sounds to create! I've always recommended television as a way to improve language skills. Every language has their own idioms (phrases), so television is a great way to hear the language as well as pick up on the idioms. Careful though! There is a great deal of slang out there which you need to be aware of...for everyday conversations or when not to use in certain situations! And of course, the best way to improve your English is practice, practice, practice! Don't be afraid to engage in conversations! I studied Spanish for 5 years and was afraid to speak it. As a result, I'm very good at reading and writing in Spanish, and can understand a conversation, but can't speak! Then I got dropped in the center of Mexico where no one spoke English; I was the only one out of 4 people I was traveling with who knew any Spanish! I quickly learned I could speak Spanish, albeit not perfectly, but enough to get by. Had I stayed in Mexico or had the opportunity to speak more, I would be great and proud of my Spanish speaking ability. Chizue, I wish you the best in your quest! Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance! Take care, ThatJerseyGirl
