Why Do We Have Eyebrows?

Have you ever wondered what purpose your eyebrows serve other than expression? Mine are really beginning to bother me! No matter what I do, wax, pluck or try to shape them, they are taking on their own personalitiy. Unfortunately I have the thick dark Brook Shields type. I have tried to thin them, I have tried waxing, I have tried plucking (ouch) but as I get older the eyebrows begin to take over. What is their purpose? I am close to doing what one of my Professors did in college for a Halloween character. She actually shaved her eyebrows off! But she wore them shaved off rather than penciling them in. I would at least do a pencil in if I shaved them. Any suggestions on what to do with uncontrollable eyebrows?

They are the most distinctive feature on our face. Eyebrows are our most expressive facial feature. They are a non-verbal way of communicating. Scientists are pretty sure that they are there to keep moisture out of our eyes when we walk around in the rain or to keep sweat out of our eyes. Maybe you need to take a trip to the beauty salon and let them shape them for you. That is the only suggestion that I have.

I knew they MUST have another function other than looks. However, I use an umbrella so I would never need them to keep the rain out of my eyes. I never thought about them keeping sweat out of my eyes. Yes a salon may be my answer, I wonder if they hurt you when you go, this area tends to be very tender for me. I will check with a local salon and see what they can do before I go crazy! LOL

i'm not really sure...i think everyone will look weird without eyebrow...i did spot a young guy without eyebrow in singapore once...and up to now, i still dont know whether is it the 'in' thing to go without eyebrow or he's ill. personally my eyebrow is quite ok..not much maintenance needed...i can pencil them when i have mood and go without it and people will not notice :D

Yes it does look very odd to see someone without eyebrows. Yes you are still very young and I don't think they get uncontrollable until we get older.

Have you tried dabbing a little vaseline on them. I have heard this works. Also, why not try a professional at a beauty parlour and see what she says. I think thick eyebrows look good though. All the best.

haha.....you got me! I never thought about the purpose of the eyebrows. I am sure it must have its own purpose more than expression to serve, but I really don't what the prupose is! For your question, I suggest you shouldn't take them too seriously. I don't think wax and pluck are good idea cause they must be very painful. Anyway, why are you so mad about you eyebrows?

Nah I could never really shave them off. I would feel stupid and like an alien. I just no longer know what to fo with them. I think I will let a salon decide.

Well, here's the reason we have eyebrows... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyebrow The eyebrow is a bony ridge above the eye that protects the eye and bears a tuft of facial hair in most mammals. The main function of the eyebrows is to prevent moisture (mostly sweat and rain) from dripping into the eye (a critical organ). The typical curved shape of the eyebrow (with a slant on the side) and the direction in which eyebrow hairs are pointed, make sure that moisture has a tendency to flow sideways of the eyes, mainly along the side of the head but also along the nose. The protruding brow ridges of modern humans could also still play a role in this process. Eyebrows also prevent debris such as dandruff and other small objects from falling into the eyes, as well as providing a more sensitive sense for detecting objects being near the eye, like insects. As to what you can do to shape them there is tweezing: http://www.ehow.com/how_2824_pluck-eyebrows.html Laser removal: http://www.idealimage.com/services/eyebrows.php Waxing: http://www.folica.com/Eyebrow_Sh_254_1.html Here is a site with several options listed http://www.folica.com/removal.htm

Eyebrows are meant to keep sweat out of our eyes.. they're a barrier just like our eyelashes are. I think shaving off eyebrows looks terrible. I shaved off half an eyebrow once (by accident). People in school made fun of me, and so I told them I had some kind of cancer. LOL Ok, so that's not very funny..

:) we do have eyebrows because it has a purpose..everything we see in our body has its own role. I do believe our eyebrows are responsible for protecting our eyes..like keeping away sweats..because our eyes are sensitive and eye lashes cannot protect our eyes alone..it needs back up..(i think so) :D

Oh no. You mean besides my close-up vision going at age 40, I have thicker eyebrows to look forward to at age 50? Bother! My eyebrows are not as thick as Brooke Shields, but I think they're pretty ugly. I have never plucked or waxed them though. I use a wet toothbrush each morning and shape them with the toothbrush. Now if I had a unibrow, I would probably ask for help at the salon. If you can afford it, electrolisis might be an option. The biggest problem with this though is that it's not really permanent. You will probably need to make several trips. Good luck - and remember beauty comes from the inside. :)

I think its to prevent anything falling in your eye. I dont know. Sounds good right? I do pluck mine and then I make them alittle darker with a eye pencil, because mine are too light.

good question. well i dont know why we have them. but i think we would look really funny without them. i hate plucking and i need to wax but i just dont have the time to do that anymore. i also have thick dark brooke shields type eyebrows. i think penciling looks really fake so i just wouldnt do that. but waxing is my solution.
