Do you use the self checkouts at the supermarket or stand in line for a cashier?

Supermarket checkout - Supermarkets now have self checkout or going to a cashier.

Which do you prefer using? If I have very few groceries I will use the self checkout machines if they are open or not packed at the time. If I have a lot of groceries, I go to the cashier. What is your reason for choosing one over the other or do you use both like I do?

Big Bear - am I doing this right?
that all depends on how many people are in line, how much they have in their carts, and how much stuff I have in my cart.

The length of the lines do have an effect on which we will do. Self checkouts are quicker if there is not a big line.

well, that would depend on how quick / efficient the cashier is. Some are pretty good.

There aren't too many of the self checkouts in my area. I have only used one once and I didn't like it. I get confused easily.lol.

It can be confusing if you have not used the machines very much. I was nervous the first few times I tried it but am okay now.

I use the self checkouts if I am pressed for time and there is a mile long line in every aisle..IT's pretty easy to do the self-checkout..There are some items, I understand, you can't do in the self checkout.;)+

I don't like going to the self checkouts for salads and other items that require weighing.

We do not appear to have many of these in the United kingdom, although there is a supermarket that I know which has 2 such checkout machines. I have watched people using them and scanning their groceries, and I have often wondered what kind of security exist to stop someone from simply adding something to their bag without scanning it. I have not yet used the system, but have been tempted a few times.

Most of our supermarkets here have at least 4 self checkout machines that people can use but sometimes it gets crowded. For the most part they work very well and makes it faster for people to get out of the store.

There is nothing wrong with going to cashier. Some of the cashiers already know me pretty well so if I see them I will go through their line.

I love the self checkout! It's so much easier to just do it myself. Of course they do have some bugs to work out...

The self checkout line is great and helps keep the lines from getting too big and saves time for some of us.

We use the self checkouts quite a bit. Especially when the lines at the regular checkouts are long ones. When these work, they are so much more efficient and quicker than standing in those long lines. The amount of items really does not have a bearing on if we use the self checkouts or not.

When I have less items, I use the self checkout machines so that I can get out of there in a hurry. But wehn I don't I have less items I go to the cashier lane.

Actually, I do use both like you do. I do not have a problem going through self check out when I have a few items. I will even go through self check out if it is one of those stores that have a long conveyor belt like the normal cashier lanes have. I normally have at least one older child with me that can bag while I scan. This way I can pay more attention to what is rang up. I wish our local WalMart would install the self checkers because it sure would move a lot faster. What is the point of the express line if it takes one just as long as a regular line with one person and a full cart?

We only use the self check if all the regular lines are just way to full and we only have one or two items. Otherwise we much perfer to use the regular check out lines.

self check out - modern conveniences sometimes work out to be a good thing. I always worry about people losing their jobs.
Usually like to check out with a person, however if time is short and I am under the limit of number of items allowed in self check out I use that. Must be careful since the marked down items may jam the self check out and then you need the Watcher to come and tell the machine to do the right thing.

It all depends on how long the lines are. If the self checkout lines are pretty empty I'll just use those. I like scanning everything myself!

It is very easy to scan things and can be quicker than going through a regular line depending on how many people are in front of you, just like you had mentioned.

I don't like the self checkouts at all, so I always use a cashier. Of course, most of the time when I'm at a store I have a bunch of groceries.

I always try to use the self check out. The only way I won't is if I have more groceries than they allow (usually the limit around here is 20 items). I find that self checkout goes much quicker and the lines don't seem as bad.

I have used them, although they are fairly new in my area. I don't mind them if I'm only doing a few items. Then I'd use them over the express checkout because usually it's faster. Now if I have a cart full of stuff I'll go through the regular checkout. When I have a lot of stuff I find it's faster and easier since the checkout has a bigger belt and allows for more things to be put up ahead of time where as the self checkout has a small area for stuff.
