Today is boxing day in Australia. I was on my way home from my sisters place past some local shops where there are four charity bins. ( the kind where donations are placed) And low and behold if there were not people raiding them. They tipped them on the side and were removing things from inside. I rang the police from my mobile and they said that they would get someone there asap. I sat for over half an hour and still no police so I went to the local station and reported the make and model and no. plate of the 2 cars . But the car was unregistered. By the time they finally got cars to the location the thieves had gone. I was so angry. If it was you would you have reported it or just turned a blind eye.

I would have reported it to the police. Where I live people are arrested all the time for stealing from the charity bins. It is too bad the police didn't get there to stop them. At least you did what you could it is not your fault they were not prosicuted.

I have done the same here in Canada and the police don't care, if no one is getting hurt then it is priority. I even reported a treat on my life and to them they told me if I don't travel to the police station 2hrs away by bus they are not even going to take it seriously. The police only want to respond to crimes with action.

You did a great job, mate. I stand by u and might do the same like u because it is our responsibility to offer maintaining the normal order of the society. It seems, however, we are much more alerter to potential dangers than some police are.

I would of reported this.you did the right thing.i do not understand why people stoop so low as to raid charity bins that is really low.their are people that have absolutly nothing out there and people are stealing what is with people.and i believe the police should of responded asap and actually got there instead of waiting like they obviously did.

But you are so morally perfect. I am ashamed at your behaviour- why didnt you get out of the car and stop them yourself? Laziness is nothing to be proud of... I may be ever so shameful according to you, but I at least would have done the RIGHT thing and confronted them...

Yes, I would have reported it! That would make me angry too. People donate their things in good faith, expecting those in need to receive. NOT that theives will help themselves and steal it! I think you did the right thing. About all I can say is people like those thieves will get what's coming to them. It may not be the police, but I do believe in karma and think they will get what they deserve.

I would have done the same thing. People were taking from other who were in deperate need of these things. That is wrong on so many levels. But just think that Karma will come back and bite them in the butt.

Well I think I would have done the same thing. I also would have been ticked off. If I would have had time I would have followed the people to where they were going atleast the one who took the most and kept calling the police till they listened and sent a car to where I had followed the person to. Did they ask for a description of the people and can you do things like a citizen arrest in Austrailia. I wouldn't have atempted a citizen arrest because that could cause trouble. To bad they weren't caught and had to be made to wear signs that stated they stole from charity bins. It is a shame what goes on now days people have just lost there since of pride and smarts when thye do that type of thing. Well, maybe soon they will get theres in the end.

this is sooo wrong on soo many levels!and whats even worse is that the police never came..but i guess in larger cities i have heard people complain about how long it takes to get somewhere..but if it was me..and they didnt come after a period of time,I would have went and got soem other help like went to a shop and maybe some guys on the street, anything to try.,but im very glad you tried most people i bet would have just moved on and ignored them ..

Here in the states, I think that's a big problem as well. Where I used to live in Florida, the charity/Goodwill stores had to put up fences for the donation areas, and restrict the hours for donations, because people were ransacking through everything, just leaving it out in the open trashed, getting rained on, so no one could use it. They had to post signs up as well saying the people caught would be charged with trespassing and theft. It's pretty sad that people are that pathetic to do that, I mean it's not like the places charge very much money anyway for the items. And yes, I would've reported it as well.

In that situation...I may have rang the police, but with my happenings with them has led me not to trust them so much. Have you thought that these people may have needed things too? Maybe they couldn't ask for help, or wanted to ask for help and had to scavage through the charity bins. And maybe the cars were unregistered because they couldn't simply afford the payments to re-register, it's another way to look at this situtaion but, you have to realise, it may not have been 'thieving' as you would put it, but those people were in need and needed to provide to their families - just think, they may not have even had a good christmas, or a christmas as such, because they had nothing to offer...unfortunately in Australia today, there are far too many people that are not in the rich side of town, and rather busting their back everyday to support themselves and family. Hope this might give you some insight on people at christmas time, and hopefully another view of what have might been happening, instead of what you may have thought was happening.

approach I am from Australia also and have witnessed the sort of theft you describe. Now it beats me why the bins are not the type that the Post Office uses for parcel posting you know the type, you pull out a slide and slide your article inside the bin, no room for hands or removal of items already in the bin and they are made of heavy metal to boot. Humans are like bacteria, some good to have some not so good. Now you know not to put donations inside the boxes already provided,do like I do, take them to the depot or find a needy family that could do with them. The Police do the best they can with the staff that they have and they must get dozens of calls for similar things, so toss up, attend a bashing, a drunk driver accident, you name it or a donation bin theft, I know which would be last on my emergency to do list. Depends how many calls you have on your emergency line.
