This is something that I could be proud of! No lies! You can come to our house and see how I type. I type so fast why? because I am a touch typist. My dad used to do this when he was younger for a living, he used to be a typist, when he types, he types really fast and without looking on the keyboard. He only types on typewriter though, he doesn't know how to use the computer. I owe it to my father that I type fast now. My father taught me how to touch type. I remember he would tell me, that it's Ok that you are very slow now because you're trying to type where your fingers should be and later on, you will be fast on it. This is the only way you could type fast by knowing the proper fingers where to type the letter. Sorry for my bad English. I am trying here. Please don't laugh. At first I practice the words The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Now, my labor and practice paid of 'cause I can type fast. IN high school, I also took typing as my elective, that's why I become soo fast now. I just don't know how fast I am per word per minute. I would like to know, but I know I type fast that my teacher heehhe!

Hi bestfriends, If you read at my first comments, I have the same experience like you with my dad. He is a stenographer and transcribing what he had taken in the court recordings are transferred to a the ordinary typewritten paper that is used by the court as well as the plaintiffs and the defendants for their copies. So he makes money by typing. In high school he teached me to take up touch typing in a manual typewriter and gave me a book about 1.5 inches thick where the pages start from learning the two forefingers' strokes to the lask winky fingers. He said, don't look at the mistakes, the book will tell you where your weakness is when you reach the page where it tells your weakness and the book will train you again at those keys. (Sounds familiar? You bet, it is used now by the typing softwares commonly available everywhere). So I was trained on that and I got to 50 WPM. Now I am more than 80 words per minute and going as fast as 100 WPM when I am already hot like a diesel engine, firing at speeds probably as fast as you are. (Am not bragging, he, he,he!)

Great bestfriends, Now you will enjoy this forums because you can type at the "speed of light"... ha, ha, ha, if that is possible! Have a great day. Remember to go to one of those websites that tests you typing speed to really make a final assessment of your typing speed. Then let us know! We would really like to find out how fast you type.

Same as my dad. I am not bragging myself too. If I do sound like then it might be because I couldn't express myself really good. LOL!

Yes, definitely I am a TOUCH TYPIST. 35+ years ago I took a typing class and in the old days, they taught you to touch type! I used to type with a speed of up to 80WPM but now I slowed down. I use a laptop and that also slowed me down quite a bit since the keyboard is so small and making it harder to type accurately when you try to type fast. To touch type you have to learn the layout of the keyboard and ofcourse you type with two hands LOL.. qwerty uiop asdfg hjkl zxcv bnmm The above is how my laptop layout is. I type with memory of the key board layout with 4 fingertips on the left and 4 finger tips on the right. ;) Good discussion!!

Not bad friend! A definite speed of 80WPM will get you a job in any secretarial position. He, he, he - just kidding!) But kidding aside, I agree with you that the keyboard is smaller than normal typewriters but the "qwerty" layout in many laptops has not changed at all, save for the additional keys on the left and right controls of the keyboard. It changes depending on the manufacturer of the laptop or the desktop computer. IBM owns the patent to the original keyboard layout of the computer so other manufacturers had tried to make their own, but because of tradition and long time training, IBM dictates the market, and their patented layout is still dominant (at least in the English language). Because of the smaller keyboards on the laptop, when at home, I prefer to use my desktop and if I have no choice, I simply plug-in an alernative keyboard to my laptop which I carry around in my bag. Then I am more comfortable with it. Some who will be reading what you posted here as "qwerty - uiop" will raise some queries, so please do help me in answering them next time. Thanks!

Fast typing you've got there. You're on the draw! I also have to thank my dad who taught me touch typing early in high school. When I entered college I could crank out thick reports and articles, though I am not a writer myself. I use it for my studies in Architecture.

Oh, is that so? So you have actually studied it as well? That is pretty fast already for a non-pro. I think you can still top that with over 100WPM if you really go thru self study courses available on the net or some freeware software. Let me know when you go over 100WPM.

This is the first that I heard of touch typist. I have to look more into it. If it is what I am thinking, then I am probably doing it and didn't know what is was. I consider myself to type really fast.

I am a half touch typist! LOL I took typing in school and I can type that way and very fast too. 64 WPM, but here lies the problem, I probably have 10-15 mistakes when I do that. So now I combine the two I touch type slow or I two finger type very fast. Either way I have less mistakes. Depends on whether I need speed or accuracy.

Looks alright! You may find it more comfortable and easier when you do full pledged touch typing because your composing time on what you write will have more of your memory time than figuring out where the next key is on the keyboard. 64 WPM is quite okay. At least you pass the 50WPM required of an applicant for clerical duty. I have a suggestion. When at work just type away and leave your errors as you type, and come back to your document sectin to edit those errors when you are at the end of your train of thoughts. That way you do not forget what was on your mind and you could keep track of your process. If you use wordprocessors, then it is no problem as you could set your software to auto edit words that are in the database of your machine and the software's dictionary.

That's pretty fast for college level typists. You can already earn a living with that speed. That is the advantage of touch typing vs. the manual method of self-learning on the keys.

I doubt it, as the pros who took up touch typing has a science behind them and this is proven in many contests. Like machine stenography vs. hand steno. Scientific method of typing is faster than the self learned typing.
