Have you enthusiastically gone to a movie and then hated it?

I had heard some good things about Elizabethtown, and got it out on DVD recently. It turned out to be very strange, with characters that seemed to be only half-written, plot lines that didn't go anywhere, an embarrassing dance by Susan Sarandon (who is normally an actress I admire), and a road trip ending which went on and on. (Apparently it was twenty minutes longer originally - good grief!)

Of course! Last week I went with my boyfriend to go and see the new James Bond movie. I was trying to keep an open mind as I thought a new James Bond would be a bit naff, but I then thought about the others which grew on me (apart from that one that did only one film) so I went and saw it. Oh my goodness! It went on and on and on and on and on and... well, you get the picture. There was no excitement in it. The funny one-liners that James Bond comes out with normally, weren't there at all. There was no Q. No gadgets apart from one which he couldn't get to work. Sigh. Oh, and he ordered a Martini and he was asked how he would like it. Did he say shaken, not stirred. ? No. He said 'I don't care'. What!?!?! And he only said 'the names Bond. James Bond.' once throughout the whole film which was at the end, but I missed it as I fell asleep for the last 20 minutes.

Gulp, and I thought this would be worth going to see. I'd heard they'd changed the approach quite a bit, but that sounds ridiculous. Naff? You must be from the UK! LOL Haven't heard anyone else on myLot using that great word.

It happened with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I thought it was too weird, but I was very enthusiastic about watching it beforehand because I love Kate Winslet and think Jim Carrey is actually a good dramatic actor.

No, I didn't know she worked in a deli. Interesting. Isn't waiting tables a very common practice for actors before they make it big? And, you might like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotted Mind. I know a lot of other people did. I might be the odd one out in my opinion.

I may give it a try when I see it in the DVD store. Yes, working as waitpersons (!) is very common for young actors. I read about Winslet in the new biography of Peter Jackson a couple of days ago. I thought once she'd made Heavenly Creatures, she'd gone straight into bigger things...

I haven't seen this, but I agree that both Winselt and Carrey are good value. In spite of what you say I wouldn't mind catching up with it on DVD! But will I be disappointed or not...LOL By the way, did you know that before Winslet made her first movie, Heavenly Creatures, she was working in a deli ('resting' between acting jobs) and when she finished the movie, she went back to the deli again. Such is the life of a movie star...

My husband and I NEVER go to the movies, just the two of us and when The Mexican came out, the one with Brad Pitt in it, we went to the theater to see it. I wanted to leave half way through it cuz it totally sucked!

I can understand why you wanted to walk out...it certainly isn't a movie that shows Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts off at their best!

Unfrtunately this happens all too often for me. I've virtuall stopped going to movies in the theater. The best example for me would be Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Yes, I heard they'd cut out the meat from the film, and just left it as a kind of chase movie.

oh yeah...it has happened to me on several occasions...but one that really sticks out in my mind was The House Of A 1000 Corpses....me and my husband heard about it two years before it came out and waited and waited for it to come out...and when it did we got to the theater two hours before it started just to get tickets on opening night...we finally get into our seats and watch the movie...after it was over we were both shaking our heads and I said never again...and then I went to see The Descent...lol

Perhaps you make your choices better than some of us who've written here. I usually try and get some idea what a movie's like before I go, but I still wind up seeing some that I wish I hadn't gone to.

That happened to me with 'The Prestige'. I was expecting a period thriller, not a steam punk sci-fi flick. The entire theme of the movie shifted, there were no likable characters, no characters had any redeeming qualities, and it seemed to just kind of meaner with no purpose. I was really thrown off, and I still can't decide if i liked the movie or not.

I had watched a lot of movies i "heard" is nice, but when i got to watch it, it turned out to be worse. I am most disappointed on horror or suspense movies that i see in trailers which seem really scary.. but arent..

This happens to me a lot...it's usually with oscar nominated movies funnily enoug. I don't know if I go in expecting too much..some examples..Cold Mountain, Brokeback Mountain (my dislike had nothing to do with the content, just found it boring), Moulin Rouge and The Interpreter..I had heard a great deal of good buzz about ll of these movies and I couldn't make it all the way through any of them.

Interesting that of the four movies you mention, there was only one I enjoyed: The Interpreter. Moulin Rouge was overblown and ridiculous, and failed on every count as a musical. Cold Mountain had great earnestness, but just never lifted off. And Brokeback Mountain suffered from the same problem, I suspect. "This is a serious subject, we must treat it with great seriousness." The Academy likes to be up with the play: there was no way Brokeback Mountain wasn't going to create some interest in the Awards, because of its subject matter. But the same issue arose years ago in relation to a film on lesbianism (with Audrey Hepburn, of all people). Just because a subject is important, doesn't mean to say it's going to prove to be a good movie.

Yes, many times. The critics loved the 'Gosford Park' but IMHO it's the worst Altman movie ever. Then Woody Allen made his first thriller 'Match point'. I was expecting something completely different. As for legendary 'Fifth Element' I stopped watching in the middle of the movie.

Oh dear! :) I've actually watched Gosford Park twice and enjoyed it, although I think there are a couple of problems with it: some of the characters get so little room that you forget who they are.

Yes acouple of weeks ago me and the girlfriend went to see Chainsaw Massacure "the begining" and it turned out to suck badly. I though it would be good because the last remake of it was really good. Oh well.

One of the recent films I saw was Kill List which I thought I should have watched. There are a list of movies like that which I taught I shouldn't have wasted my time watching it, some of them are Kill List, Young Adult, Raavanan, Endhiran, Khuda Gawah This are only few of them I remember, it's a long list ...
