Have you ever been through a disaster

So far, Mississippi has not recovered completely from the damage caused by Hirricane Katrina. It is sad to see such a lovely place ruined by a disaster. I wonder why it has taken so long to get things back to normal a year and a half AFTER the fact. Have you ever been in a disaster area and how long did it take before things returned to normal.

After Katrina it was aweful. we had no electricity for three weeks. it was hot and i was pregnant. we lost all our food and trees on the roads made it impossible to get anywhere not that there were any stores open of course! but so many people lost their homes. i work in a nursing home and we have a sweet little lady who is there because katrina claimed her home and everything in it. We have a nice museam that is just now opening back up next month from the damages katrina cost. i wonder what happened to all the money that was donated to help these people? hmmmm no comment.

I've been through a sandstorm- dangerous to go outside. I've been through typhoons and minor earthquakes. The worst was a bad storm when a huge tree missed our house and fell into our garden instead... really scary!

Yes, Huracane hugo 1989 in Puerto Rico, I work with the american red cross and it was a real disaster at southeast part of the island, and I have worked in other huracanes in the area but this is the one I remember most because of the close I was to the people in need.

A tornado came through my hometown when I was a kid and did lots of damage. I was young but I remember it.

The closest I have ever been to living in a disaster area was when Hurricane Isabelle hit a few years ago. We have had hurricanes through here before, but this one did more damage than usual. I didn't have power for over 2 weeks, but luckily I didn't have any damage to my main home, just the garage. Many of my neighbors did have damage to their homes. It took about a month for everything to get back to normal, and some roads washed out and didn't get fixed for over a year.

it took thousands of years for mother nature to form such a lovely place like that and i'm sure that it would also take her a very long time to make the place as beautiful as before.

I'm right next door in Louisiana and I can totally relate to your post. I think it will still be a long time before things back to normal IF they do go back to the original state. I somehow doubt this will happen.

Yes, I am still trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina. I used to live in New Orleans till five months ago. I was lucky that my home did not flood but we had some serious damage and because of employment and financial reasons we decided to move. The damage in New Orleans and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast will take many years to recover from. I am not really honestly sure if this area will totally recover during my lifetime.I have family members and friends who lost everything they had in one day but I am blessed that they evacuated and are alive. The only reason that I can think of why the recovery has been slow is because the enormity of the devastation. Even the place that I evacuated to-Lake Charles-was devastated by Hurricane Rita. It took us seven weeks to get back home. I pray that I will never have to go through something like this ever again.
