I have horrible insomnia it is like my brain won't shut off. I have read many articles and tried a few things but please offer your advice or suggestions here. I used to take prescription sleeping pills but they atopped working as well. A few articles suggest eating carbs (like cereal) before bed but I also am trying to watch my weight.

I do understand how you feel. I have the same problem and with me it appears to be genetic. We have traced this sleeping problem back as far as my great Grandmother. The older we get the worse it gets also. My Mom is on a prescription sleeping pill now just to get 1 hr sleep a night. I too have found nothing that works for long. I will keep an eye on this discussion and see if anything new that I haven't tried before is posted. I'm so bad that I spent one night singing the theme songs to disney movies in my head. gezzzzzzz Good luck and I hope we both find something that helps.

I will be sure to post anything I find that does work to help us all out. It is a terrible thing and nice to know you are not the only one. I did the theme song thing myself but it was sitcoms like My Three Sons and Green Acres LOL

When you go to sleep just dont think anything and make your brain bank . Times go on and you will fall in sleeping naturally. Mary

When I have trouble sleeping I will listen to music, and that helps me settle down, and eventually i'll just fall asleep. Also, just watching TV until I fall asleep also works pretty well. Good luck!

I was insomniac before. I think I can say that your mind or your brain is much stronger than any other part of your body. Whatever your sickness is, it gets cured when you first try to convince yourself that you can sleep. I tried it and it worked. It's all in the mind. When you go to bed, close your eyes and dont think of anything else. Tell you brain to sleep and shut down and it will. Its been proven and tested, you wont need any medications for this. Good luck!

I usually can sleep very well, except when I have pressure. I gotta try to be relax, either by reading books or watching movies before I sleep. Gotta be aware of doing something that it may make you keep thinking even when you want to sleep, such as playing games, reading some novels or watching some movies, avoid those activities that will make you keep thinking of them. Perhaps you can try meditation, my hubby said it really helps.

thank you for responding. I have taken medication some helps some doesn't but I am trying to go to healthier alternatives. Sometimes reading or watching a movie helps until I get into bed then seems I am wide awake again. I have heard some of the newer medications are not addictive but do we really ever know.

i had terrible insomnia a few months back and nothing would really help. i tried taking a shower drinking warm milk. i took over the counter sleeping pills and they helped a lot. i took 2 and they were 50mg of medicine. get the generic for unisom sleep gels and take 2. they're like $4 a bottle for 32 pills. prescription pills get into your system and stop working but for me the over the counter didnt. i took them for 3 months. and also stress can cause it. so drink hot tea with a stress relief aroma in it. those help. also taking a yoga or pilates class will help calm your nerves. and shower soothers are great. put them on the bottom of the shower and turn it on warm as you like it and they will sooth the tension right out of you. eating peanuts before bed help. suprising but true.

I always read before going to sleep. I have no problems falling asleep. But many nights I wake up several times during the night and can't fall back to sleep. One way to slow your racing mind is to become aware of your thoughts. Take a minute and try to see what you are thinking about. As your thoughts come into awareness they usually slow down. Another method I have had success with is concentraiting on your breathing. Don't try to change how you breathe, but simply become aware of your natural breathing as you are lying in bed. If you can continue to focus on your breathing you will find your mind relaxing. At first it will be hard to stay focused on your breathing, but give it some practice. Just think, you go through your entire day and never become aware of your breathing because in some way your mind is asleep. You can use this idea to become focused during the day by remembering your breathing. This will increase your awareness over time and hpoefully you will be able to slow down your racing mind. I don't ever take pills because I think they are addictive. I will never take them.

There are a ton of sleep medications. I know because I have been on everyone. I have been on medication to sleep for about 8 years. Usually something will work for a while, a year or more then it will not be effective. My doctor just switched to a medication that has a side effect of sleepiness called Seroquel. I take 100 mg at night. It usually works and I can wake and usually fall back to sleep at night. I have tried natural stuff and everything else. Medication is the only thing that works. The meds I have been on are Soma, Sonata, Restoril, Ambien, Ambien CR, Halcion, Amatryptalin and now Seroquel. The most effective were Ambien and Halcion. Good luck!

I have the same problem to be quite honest! So I know EXACTLY how you feel.. I feel like I am never able to sleep, & then when I do end up falling a sleep.. I never know exactly what time I had gone to sleep.. It can be quite frustrating at times! I've found the best thing to do when you are unable to sleep.. Is to not just lie there. I've found the best thing to do is get up & start doing something. Other wise I've found I've just ended up frustrating myself, & never ended up falling a sleep. A lot of people say to drink a warm glass of milk. But I personally have not found that to work.. I've also found any type of tea doesn't work as well. And over the counter sleeping pills have not worked out all to well for me either. What I've found that works is taking a warm, yet hot bubble bath. And just unwinding in the tub. Sometimes I've put lavender in the tub & I've found the smell helps to relax me.. A lot of people find the smell of lavender to help to relax them.. You may want to try that as well if you haven't already! I find purchasing a CD that consists of music that is relaxing to help as well.. I find enigma to be a rather relaxing CD to listen to.. Or even Robert Miles.. I've found the music relaxes me & ends up making me close my eyes & then I am able SOMETIMES to get a better good nights rest.. Another suggestion I can try to give you is.. Trying to relax your body consciously. By starting with one area of your body one at a time. It could be by just starting with your feet or your arms. I've found this works occasionally at times.. I've found exercising in the early morning or getting some fresh air during the day helps me to sleep every once in a while. I've found sometimes by exercising it makes me feel a lot more relaxed afterwards as well. I hope you are able to get a good nights rest someday soon. I know how difficult it is to do though as I go through it each & every night.. I hope something ends up working for you.. I wish you all the best.

Some things my doctor has told me (my insomnia is horrible too) include no caffeine after 6 pm (if I'm going to bed around 10); getting on a routine; reading a book before bed; relaxation techniques (similar to deep breathing) and keeping the lights dimmer at night. I also (in addition to the above) will make sure my feet are covered at night (no matter what time of the year my feet are cold!), don't watch TV in bed and if I wake during the night {bathroom run} to use as few lights if possible so I don't wake up. I asked my former doctor for a prescription for sleeping pills but he didn't recommend it. Good luck, I'm going through a horrible bout now myself!

It is a horrible thing and I hope some of the given advice will help I prefer not to do prescriptions but if it gets down to it again I will. I also need my feet covered in bed as well even in the summer. I did stop the caffeiene and such and don't watch tv in bed and if I cannot sleep I get back up instead of laying there and waiting-good luck to you as well and if anything does work I will let you know.

What I do is take a Melatonin supplement, which makes me naturally drowsy. Since it's all natural there's no chance for addiction like prescription sleep aids. Since one of my main problems in falling asleep is my anxiety and how I can't get my brain to shut up and stop worrying I will use different things to get my mind occupied. For awhile I listened to some hypnotism tapes that helped me fall asleep, but lately I just turn on DVDs of movies or TV shows and listen to the audio commentaries that go with them. For some reason, since I can just close my eyes and listen, it keeps my brain occupied enough for me to fall asleep within 5-10 minutes.

I have that exact same problem I use to take Mellaril a prescription tranquilizer that contains similiar properties to the melatonin but it only worked for a few days :(

I try to be in bed by 11 pm but that rarely happens. I suffer from insomnia so it keeps me up. Sometimes I am awake until two or three in the morning. I hate it. I would much rather go to be early and wake up feeling refreshed. Even though I know I won't be able to sleep, I always lay down by 11. I stay in bed for 20 minutes and if I am still not asleep then I get up. When I am up I try to do something active. Cleaning, exercise, etc. Then I lay back down. That usually gives my husband enough time to fall asleep without me moving around and annoying him. lol

Hi~ Well, I'm an occasional insomniac as well and I've heard many things. Some of the things I've heard have been, warm milk, eating before bed (these both usually help me), Rubbing rum on your gums. Also there are many many MANY other sleeping pills in the world and some are none habit forming. Ask yourself this question: "Do I ingest any natural stimulants like caffiene or others? and if so, how often throughout the day." But most of all I would definately see a doctor about your problem if you haven't already. He/she may have the best solution for it!

What I do is sing myself a lullaby and rock myself to sleep. It works for me but it might not work for others. Some people say that a good thing to do to go to bed is to have a cup of hot milk before you go to bed. I hope these ideas help you sleep better.
