An Interesting Observation - Responding Without Reading

United States
January 3, 2007 2:41pm CST
So I posted a discussion on being frustrated with anti-smokers making generalizations. The title was tongue in cheek - a parody of exaggerated complaints. And yet... Close to half of the people who responded responded based on the title alone, and didn't bother to read the discussion. I was amazed. I figured there would probably be one or two who didn't bother to read, but the numbers staggered me. I think this pretty well proves my theory that most people are idiots.

This happened with one of my discussions also. It was about homemade gifts that my boyfriend had made me that I said I loved. I wanted to know other peoples opinions on homemade gifts because when I told people he made me stuff, they gave me wierd looks. Most people replied telling me "I shouldn't care about how much he spent on me". I also realized at that moment that most people are idiots as well. They didn't even read what I had said.

I really can't believe some people. You can't make assumptions based on a few words in a subject line!

yeah i red that topic you started miskatonic.. i actually figured that out..your title is not really the issue.. and i found that too, many memebers really dotn read the details... because it happens to me once. some members take my title literally and dont bother to read what its realy like...

Your boyfriend sounds sweet. The real value lies in him thinking about you. I guess that just about sums up this discussion, too. If people spent time thinking about what they are reading and responded appropriately, this would be a much more interesting place indeed.

I know exactly what you mean, I started a discussion related to the importance of adding tags to discussions. I mentioned clearly why tags are important, and I had so many asking me "why tags are important"..I was so mad, I left each one a comment to READ the discussion and then reply. They all got a "-". So many of them even answered telling me why tags are important (ignoring htat I had already mentioned it in my discussion)I can't believe people do that!!!

I was doing the same thing - responding with 'read' and giving a negative response, but now 'm not even reading the responses.

I saw one from someoone else too that did the same thing and people started to really go off on him. He took titles from some posts and put in the misspelled words and stuff like that and some people on here didn't read the full description and really starting giving him a hard time. I read the discussions, sometimes Ihave to read them twice to be sure that I answer on topic, but I don't read the responses until after I answer.

If a discussion has 10 pages of responses, I probably won't read all of them, but I at least read the 1st or 2nd page before responding. I like to see what others have written before I respond.

Same here, which is why I end up posting more comments than actual responses. :P

I'll rarely read many responses, but I'll at least read what I'm responding to.

If I'm going to reply on a topic I'll always read the entire initial post. I mightn't read all the replies if there are many of them, but I'll try to read the first couple of pages and probably the last one. I have had an instance though when I posted with a problem I had. I managed to solve the problem and posted to the topic to say that I'd solved it. I received another 3 pages of solutions for the problem after that, but this I put down to the fact that I should be able to edit my initial post, or at least add a bit onto it to keep people informed.

And how about people who answer things that are totally nonsensical? I'm always shaking my head that people even bother to write something when it has no connection with the discussion at hand.

This proves the theory that most people here don't like to read. It is difficult for them to read and they pass it just like that. I have made the observation myself. Report them.

not true!when u post such controversial titles like that u are bound to irritate people like me who will fly off the handle without reading the rest of youur post.so actually in the end it is your fault for having posted such a title lile"i hate smokers and so on"!

Or they just don't want to waste time reading, since they snap off one line responses and go on to something else.

Ok I have read these responses, and I think if you read a post with a title that upsets you then you should read all of it or move on to another topic. If you do not read through the entire thing then you are left with absolutely no clue as to what the person is trying to say if anything. Maybe they were trying to get your attention, and apparently it worked.

I honestly think that everybody needs to stop complaining about that others do. Let them do what they want. If they are doing something wrong them it's on them and they will be the ones who gets their rating to go down. Their's too much complaining going on with this site. It's like a big friken war going on and It gets kinda annoying when mostly all their is now is discussions with people complaining about what someone else did on here. Write an email to the head of mylot. It's just stupid to start a discussion about it, that's just as bad.

I've noticed this, too. It really annoys me-- I feel sorry for the people trying to start ACTUAL discussions. I was looking at one person's topic in order to better respond to another that they had started, and I noticed that most of the people were answering the question from the title. The thing is, the title was just a title-- the poster ANSWERED the question. How can people have any discussion if they don't actually read what they are replying to? It takes away the whole point of MyLot, I think. Anyways. I looked at your smoking topic. I have to say, it's very amusing. I liked that you went after the people that weren't actually reading what you had to say. You'd think with that kind of topic they would-- a generalized headline does not contain details to respond to. And, of course, that wasn't even what your post was about... But, yes. It's amazing how many people are posting whatever just in order to earn a few cents. Good job with your post. Bye!

I responded to that post but after reading the discussion and i know that some pseople would have been very upset by the title and just moved right to telling you that you were wrong without reading the discussion. I think that it is very interesting that so many people reacted this way. I thought that more people were honest in posting on mylot.

It's so absurd isn't it. I try to read all the responses before I respond. I must admit though when I get to page 5 or 6 I start skimming the page.. It takes so long to read it all. But I guess I just have to practice speed reading or something. I have been on here all day now and have only posted about 10 responses because I take so long reading. If people would stop with the nonsense it would be easier for us all. Good topic...so true.

They also tend to be people who like Pavlov's dog, react according to stimuli. This is a relatively recent thing, where substance apparently has nothing to do with issues. If I wanted to take a mental rest,I'd become a dogmatist. No thought required, no intelligence needed. Have a look at some of the "public debate"; more BS than a feedlot, but it gets aired all the same. I think the people with the brains have stopped trying to get through to this sadly educated pack of sheep.

I can understand your frustration here. But the fact is, most people come here for money and they are constantly looking to answer discussions which are simple to answer and sometimes people tend to answer discussions even if they don't understand the topic and it seems they are just targeting the number of discussions they have particpated just to up their rating and earnings. So, it is better to put discussions in a simple way so that everybody can understand the topic....it's only my view here......

i think stupid people should pay a stupid tax and solve the country's debt crisis. People don't want to read, they want to be heard. Most of the time when you are talking to someone they are formulating their response before you finish your statement. It's the thought that we think we are more important than the other peorson. It's sad really.

Yes I saw that at your discussion and everywhere else, it seems most people are here only for the money, they don't want to read but just to make as much posts as possible, I have a discussion about forms of abuses in mylot in a sarcastic way but many people didn't even know what I'm talking about and replied nonsense, some even implemented the same abuse methods that I explain about and say that I will report it all !! .. it's really frustrating that mylot admin is not taking tougher stance against abuse :(

I find a lot of anti-smokers are frustrated with me because I like to generalize them. Had a BIG problem with this when they passed the smoking ban in Ohio.

I think that people don't read, just post to score more points. Just like leaving yes or no answers...what the hell???? Are they that desperate to get one point on their account?????
