whenever i try to speak tagalog or my wife's visayian the people in the Philippines always respond to me in English..so i just give up..my wife has been here in the US 22 years and we have a home in the US and one in Negros Occidental..but I have been to Manila a lot and like the city and the people there..but I don't get a chance to pratice my Filipino much and we do have The Filino Channel on our cable service..i like to watch Wowee..its kind of fun.. My nephew has been to Singapore with his martial arts..and his name is Junjun..(Edgar Rosquillo) but he lives not far from Makati, but his and his family go to the CCF church...well, thanks for the response. But I still don't think tagalog is the easiest to learn as its been 25 years of trying to pick up the "slang" ...i really hate it when a Filipino says to me.."I would like to talk to you but you talk to much American SLANG..they even tell my wife that..as she as spent six years in Tokyo Japan working for foreigners and 22 years here..so maybe she does speak a lot of "american slang__( but its not to impress anyone ...as she pronounces apple like an american...its hard to change back and forth...after you learned to think in another language...

I thik this depends on what your mother tongue is. I'm Italian and the first foreign language I studied was French and I found it rather easy. Then I studied English and also this one was easy for me. The same happened with Spanish, which I learned quite easily, but German was rather difficult and even after many years there are still lots of things I do not know. After German I learned Portuguese, which was OK for me because I already spoke Spanish and these two languages are a bit similar. I think that if you are from a Latin language country, it is easier for you to learn other Latin languages and if you are from the North of Europe, maybe it's easier to learn other languages of the same family.

Not an educated response but I have heard that Indonesian is quite easy and that English is about the hardest. My daughter learned some Indonesian at school and found it quite easy.

since my mother tounge is english and my sencond language is tagalog, spanish is easier to understand and to speak. Because there are some words in english and tagalog, that sounds like and have same meaning in spanish. Like candle for english, candela for spanish and kandila for tagalog. and other words. Spanish is easier for me cause i can put emphasized on the r or ra sound.

I think it depends what your native languge is. I was born in Australia to Italian parents and Italian was my first spoken language, English my second, though it's the one I studied in. With my Italian background I found it relatively easy to learn French at high school as they have the same latin roots. I also did German at high school and loved it, but didn't find it easy because of my English. I found it easy because in German there are certain rules but no exceptions to the rules. In that sense it was easy to learn. English is a difficult language to learn as a second language because there are so many exceptions to the rules and also because of the different ways of spelling words that sound exactly the same (bow, bough; to, too, two) and the different ways to pronounce words that are similar in spelling: bOUGH, enOUGH. bOUGHt.

I am certain English is the hardest to write based on posts on the board. Many of them have important words missing, which would make the sentence easy to understand. Keep in mind I live in the United States and English was the first language I had to learn. When I started school, I was taught French, which has to be one of the easiest and am now learning Japanese slowly.
