I have seen 2 breeds say pomerian dog and then an german shepherd. There can be no comparision between these two in terms of their thinking .With the latter it wud be easy to get her do what i want. But with shepherd it's so hard ,sometimes i feel it's thinking just like me.and it quite easily ignores and plays around with me.... What do u people say?Which is the smartest breed of Dog??

Border Collies are definitely the smartest. There are obedience trials that ban Border Collies from taking part as their superior intelligence makes the competition unfair.

I would think so. Most herding dogs are shetland sheepdogs though. I am not too sure about what dogs are best for herding. I think it depends on the livestock itself and other factors. But I have never seen a german sheperd dog do herding. Hope this helps.

I think, that german shepards are one of the smartest dog breeds .That is why the police uses them for K9 dogs. They are very easy learning and obidient dogs..I love German Sheperds.

I agree that German Shepherds are one of the smartest breeds. Although, even a mutt can be very intelligent. But a German Shepherd looks intelligent too.

I really believe the little dogs have the upper hand here. Chihuahuas for example are incredibly smart! Puppies learn their names in a matter of a few days (if that!). My vote is on the little dog.

How does one know the smartest breed? Is there a test of some sort? There are different views here so I'm confused. Anyways, here's a joke about the smartest dog: Four men were bragging about how smart their dogs were. One man was an engineer, the second man was an accountant, the third man was a chemist, and the fourth was a government worker. To show off, the engineer called to his dog. "T-square, do your stuff." T-square trotted over to a desk, took out some paper and a pen, and promptly drew a circle, a square, and a triangle. Everyone agreed that that that was pretty smart. The accountant said that his dog could do better. He called to his dog and said, "Spreadsheet, do your stuff." Spreadsheet went out into the kitchen and returned with a dozen cookies. He divided them into four equal piles of three cookies each. Everyone agreed that that was good. The chemist said that his dog could do better still. he called to his dog and said, "Measure, do your stuff." Measure got up, walked over to the fridge, took out a quart of milk, got a ten-ounce glass from the cupboard, and poured exactly eight ounces without spilling a drop. Everyone agreed that that was pretty impressive. Then the three men turned to the government worker and said, "What can your dog do?" The government worker called to his dog and said, "Coffee Break, do your stuff." Coffee Break jumped to his feet, ate the cookies, drank the milk, claimed he had injured his back while doing so, filed a grievance report for unsafe working conditions, put in for worker' compensation, and went home for the rest of the day on sick leave. They all agreed that that was brilliant! =)

In every breed there are individuals that are highly intellegent. But the Border Collie is over-all the most intellegent. Poodles are also on the list, top 5 I think. Not the tiny ones that have been sooo messed up by in-breeding, cross breeding. But the standard size. But remember, being highly intellegent is not always a good thing. You have to keep that kind of dog busy all the time. Otherwise they get bored and start thinking of things to do on their own. That is why dogs like Border Collies, Aust. shepards, German shepards, etc, are good at having jobs all day, and other dogs are good at laying around and sleeping or playing simple games a couple times a day.
