Walking in the Dark

How many times have you been driving on a dark road and encountered a person walking? I have encountered many people walking in the dark, wearing dark clothes! This is a very dangerous practice. People who walk along a dark road should wear light clothing or clothing that is reflective. Dark clothing is harder to see in the dark.

Yes, I agree. People walking in the dark wearing dark clothing are not visible until you are almost on top of them, and this can be very dangerous. There is no need to wear light or bright clothing although if you don't have anything else, it would certainly be a great help. You can just wear a reflective band over top of your clothes, or carry a torch with a double light, one at the front and one at the back. (A car repair light is good, as it has a red light at one end and a white light the other). This would warn motorists that you were on the road, and your safety would be much higher.

Great advise. People really need to make themselves more visible when walking in the dark.

headlights at night - walking along the road in the dark is just not smart, you should have something you can through across your shoulder to make you more visible.
yes, it is understandable that they are hard to see. However, think of this.. People wear such dark clothing too much as a rule nowadays. Perhaps they have been stranded in some way and their only alternative is to hoof it. On the other hand perhaps they just don't care!!

Oh I know or they will ride a bike in dark clothing. Either way it makes them very hard to see. I remember back when I was a kid, my mother and I were coming home from visiting my grandmother. It was dark and we almost hit our nieghbor's son. He was seventeen, had long black hair, had on black jeans, black jacket and a black t-shirt. My mother pulled over to give him a lift home and started to chew him out for out walking like that. He did say he hadn't planned on it, he'd left his girlfriends too late and it got dark on him. However he was very lucky my mom spotted him. It would have been very easy to hit him. He did learn his lesson and thankfully he didn't learn it the hard way.

It is indeed a dangerous practise. My mum always told me that people who wear dark clothing at night time are up to no good lol. I think all these people need to remember would be that even though they can see us we cannot see them until we are almost on top of them. They may find this out the hard way though.

Oh my, we are plagued with these types in my neighborhood. My subdivision doesn't have that many street lights, so most of the streets are dark. These people instead of walking on the sidewalk at night, walk in the dark street. That's ok, I get a real kick getting right behind them and blowing my horn. So I reckon as long as they keep doing it, the longer my hobby will last ;)

That is one way of getting them to realize that they are in danger.

It is a dangerous practice to walk in the dark, particularly wearing dark clothing. I have encountered this while driving several times and wonder why the person does that. Especially when they run across the road outside of a cross walk. Another situation I have encountered is when I am driving at night and a deer runs out in front of me. We were both lucky that I wasn't travelling too fast and suggest that at night we slow so to avoid any unexpected situations. Often when we travel a bit slower we can avoid accidents that if we were going a bit faster we would not of been able to avoid. Especially this time of year when things are a bit wet out. In closing I must add that one night I was travelling home around a winding corner that then inclines. As I was rounding the corner just before the incline I came upon a kid on a skate board flying down the hill on my side of the road. I immediately hit the brakes. He was starteled and finally maneuvered enough to jump off his board and grab it before running off the road onto the sidewalk. I was clearly shaken as I went into the store I stopped at just before home. I have had close calls before and not because I was driving too fast but because of something someone else had done or was doing. We all must drive defensively and be extra careful when driving at night.

There have been so many accidents that happen as a result of people not thinking when they walk on a highway or road, or enter traffic when walking.

I do n ot like to walk alone in total dark. In big city and safe neighborhoods, I am OK to walk. Walking with my dogs? my dogs have flashing leash...

in the area where i live we have quit of few amish people living so sometimes i come across them driving their bikes in the dark (and they wear dark color clothes) but the majoirity of them now have headlights or a flashing light on their bikes now, so it is not so common anymore.

I often wonder have these people who walk along in the dark dressed in dark clothes ever driven a car themselves. It was spilling rain the other night and I had to go out to a friend's house. I went to turn off the main road and lo and behold, there was this guy in black in the centre of the junction. I had to swerve and he ranted and raved because I'd nearly hit him. I just drove on, but I felt like reporting him for standing in the middle of the junction in dark clothes. Idiot!

We see people walking all the time in the dark, especially ladies and most of the time they are by themselves. I don't understand why people do this, its so dangerous to be out walking in the dark by yourself. And to make the matter worse we see people wear dark clothing and cross the road right in front of moving traffic. Sometimes its like common sense has went right out the window. What really iritates me is when they have children with them and do that. They can be dumb with their own lives but they shouldn't be with their kids lives. Sorry for the rant.

NO problem with the rant. What examples are they setting for their children?

I see your point but perhaps a woman would walk with dark clothing so as not to attract attention.

If they are walking on a dark road and a driver didn't see them it could be risky for both. Accidents happen at the blink of an eye.

@rebelann I am teaching Little Miss the importance of walking against traffic. She still worries about the cars coming on the other side of the road, as do I. But, I try to reassure her that I can hear them and they see us.

That's why they say to walk against the traffic so you can see what is coming and can move out of the way @ElusiveButterfly

You are very right, I am so scared that I am going to hit someone like this who is walking down the road at night and not wearing anything reflective, even a white shirt would reflect light. These same people are usually walking extremly close to the road if not in it as well, as if they are trying to get hit or something. Its really scary.

You should drive with your super beam lights on. They're probably trying to get hit. They probably want to die or get hit for money.

It has happened with me as well many times. The worst thing is when it is raining. The visibility is already low because of the dark and then the rain and all and on top of that people walking on the sides of the roads wearing dark clothes. It is really a very dangerous thing to do indeed and should be avoided
