That you get called dude, man, mate, dear, honey (also was called hunny) etc. when someone is responding to you. I know my avatar does not tell if I am a he, she or it. I know it is not really of any significance but it aggravates me...

No, I can't say it's ever bothered my here on Mylot. Sometimes if terms like "honey", "sweetie" or "my dear" are used condscendingly THAT bothers me. I live just outside Philadelphia and there is always the old Philly gender neutral method of address - YO!

I havent been called any of those but some sound like they might be waitrsees or bar tenders for they all call ya honey sweety and dear one of the people sounds like an Aussie for they call every one Mate. As for Dude or Man that could be younger person than you and is only their way of talking not to aggavate you

I guess it does not really bother me, but the supercilious sounding "my dear" gets to me. I know that is not haw it is intended, it is usually a person who does not speak English as a first language. Some people call me Gert, and it shows that they feel close, or intimate with me. The greetings you mention just show feeling of companionship. i.

I dont mind being called "dude" (even though I'm female) cause I do it to ppl all the time though usually to men that I know and not strangers...I dont mind "mate" either....."man" I wouldnt care for since I'm not a man BUT I use the word myself however not when refering to a person..for me its an expression used in place of "wow" eg: "oh wow let me tell ya" instead I usually say "oh man let me tell ya!" but being called dear, sweetie or honey i dont care for ESPECIALLY when the person is younger than me! BUT at the same time if its someone I've talked to a few times and they say "hun" thats fine

Honey, dear, sweetheart... all of those irk me. But it's because I come from a background where those are used as insults. Since polite women don't come out and call each other bad names. It's weird and complicated and this bizarre social construct. I use dude and man all the time, and am perfectly fine with people using them with me.

It really doesn't bother me but if it bothers you then you should ask whoever is doing it to stop.
