It was a bad situation for both sides, in my opinion. I wouldn't call it tragic, though.. tragic is what happened to Bret's brother Owen Hart. Vince shouldn't have screwed Bret over like he did, but in a way, I don't blame him. Bret didn't leave him much of a choice. It's been known in the business for a long time, that when you leave, you pass the torch onto the next up and coming wrestler. Andre the Giant did it for Hulk Hogan when he retired, too. Bret shouldn't have insisted that he retire a champion.. when you think about it, it's kinda trivial.. I mean what does it really matter? And as far as Shawn Michael's knowing about it.. he and the ref were told how to end the match as they were making their entrances. They didn't have ANY time at all to argue with Vince, or plead their cases. They basically seemed stuck doing what their boss told them. I have nothing but respect for Bret Hart, and Shawn Michaels. I still watch wrestling to this day, and always will.

Bottom line, Bret Hart saw right threw Vince Mcmahon for who he really was. If Bret would have sign that contract, his souls whould of been gone for good. He was already having problems in his maariage and his family as well. Plus he did not leave on good terms and were willing to take the belt to WCW. That was a major no no. So that's why he got screw by Vince at the Survivor Series against Shawn Michaels (who knew about it) and stole the title from Bret. After that, it put a foul taste in my mouth, i never respected WWE again. Even though there were some good matches afterwards. Now that The Rock is gone, it been competely boring. I can't tell u whose who anymore.
