I'd like to hear from people who have been on unemployment benefits. I was on unemployment in the early 90's but luckily I was able to find work relatively quickly.

I was off and on unemployment benefits for years. I've been off for two years now, and that's the longest I've ever been. I have problems finding and keeping a job. I have great skills, but sometimes people just don't like me. Sometimes it's my own fault, a lot of times it's them.

I know what you mean. I'm trying to get into my own business, but it seems overly complicated and expensive, especially when it comes to taxes. And, I'm not making any money.

You've got to get out of California. Too many restrictions there and so many more laws in effect than anywhere else in the nation. It's much easier to start a business elsewhere.

I have been on unemployment for almost 6 months now- I just found out last week that I got a really fantastic job that I was interviewing for. Anyways, the NY State Unemployment pay is pretty poor. I get the maximum amount, and it's not even close to 1/2 of what I was making. Don't get me wrong, it helps, but you can't live on unemployment exclusively. Luckily I had some savings to fall back on, and I didn't have to break into my retirement funds. I can't wait to get a real paycheck again! Claiming the benefits now is super easy, though. It's all done online once a week, and takes only 2-3 minutes. I had to go in to the employment office just once for an "orientation", and other than that they haven't bothered me.

I'm so glad you were able to find a job and didn't have to struggle with the low unemployment benefits for much longer. That's great that it can be mostly taken care of online these days. When I was laid off, it was just before Christmas. I remember it well because my Grandma had just passed away, then I was laid off from work and then a week later my dad was laid off from his job. My poor Mom was SO stressed out that month.

I am tired of being on unemployement. It took over 4 weeks to get any payment. When on benefits, you need to keep track of every contact you make for new job prospects. There are periodic reviews to see that you are adhering to the rules. I know that there are many that buck the system, so it is necessary for them to check in on those receiving benefits. With a job interview on Monday, I hope to gain employment again.

My dad called it "unenjoyment" when he was on it. Wow, I can't believe you had to wait 4 weeks to get a payment! Did your severance from your last job cover you during that time?

In Canada it is called Employment Insurance or EI for short. I am currently receiving benefits from it as I was put on medical stress leave. I won't be returning to my old job, but am actively job seeking at the moment. Being off work greatly improved my health for the time I've been away.

I have a health problem that is aggrivated by stress, but I can't take a medical leave for it. I know what you mean about your health improving. I was working extra hours for several months and had recently been cut back. I'm still making enough money, so I'm not worried about it at the moment. My health has made drastic improvements to the point where I feel almost healthy.

I live in a country where the unemployment benefit is only 5 dollors a month. Anyhow, nobody lives with that money alone. Most of them do work. I dont have to worry about that yet, coz I have a job.

I recieved unemployment in 1994 and then went back to work befor my time was up on my benefits. I became unemployed in 2004 and tried to claim unemployment benefits and was denied, as the state that I lived in was a right to work state and they have strange rules about their unemployment. I hope that I do not have to ever file a claim again as I really felt wronged when they denied me. I figure if you pay into it you should be able to claim it but that is not how it works at all.
