What do you do when you see a beggar?

I have this genuine question. I just came across a beggar and did not know what to do! When I thought 'how poor' and I pity him and moved my hand towards my pocket...and then I observed him. He could walk fine, his hands, legs were all functional, he was not handicapped. So why should I pay him? What doesn't he find work and earn his bread? This confuses me a lot and I do not know if I should oblige a beggar or not? Most of the times, these guys are fit n fine..then why do they beg for money? What would you do in such a case?

I would never shell out money for a beggar whatsoever his condition. It is human to feel pity for a beggar; but remember he is destined to be that way. By giving him alms u won't change the world for him. When i come across a beggar i tell him to chant the lords name as that may prove helpful to him.

Hi neo2neo, its a good question you asked. Its true that even if some are healthy they keep begging on streets. You know that it is a competetive world. Everyone is striving hard for money, including beggars. A man's stomach need to be filled in order to have his skills been put to use. One side of the world is very rich whereas the other side of the world is hungry for basic needs. Its pity to find a man begging on streets for his daily bread. I usually give beggars some amount with which he can fill his stomach well. Though its encouraging for them, imagine ourself in such a situation begging on streets for daily food when none passing by cares for you when you are dying of hunger and/or disease. Though beggars never change themselves from begging, I feel its only a very small help that I do for them by giving an amount for one day meal. We help many people around us, knowingly or even unkowingly. Why cant we help these people out for one session for food?

Yes, I would help them if they are hungry, but I would offer them food instead of money. Many times they accepted food (they were genuinely hungry!) but 80% of times they simply refuse the food and ask for money. After I refused the money the curse me and shout at me for not giving cash and wasting their time!! Well, the experiences differ person to person. Since then I stopped even giving them food too, fearing that he wouldn't accept that and curse me for nothing.

Giving alms is sometimes helping grow their population, there are some I give, mostly I don't even if I want to specially when they scatter on the streets, they are there because they find people giving alms in there's if only society would not give then there is no reason for them to be there because they will get nothing. Some people even do business out of these poor creatures even. I do not know why human is so soft hearted that others get advantage over that soft heart in men.

Thanks Perry! They mostly get these people from other parts of the country and make them beg in the city. Sure it is a business for some people. They scatter in busy streets and if you give one of them many of them will notice this and get behind you to pay them too!

I really like the discussions you write. Yes I feel the same as u do when U see beggars. In India there is lot of umemployment, so what can they do if they don't find a job.I think begging is the last chance anyone can get to earn.Yes there are some people who find this easy. I only give to children. Its really pity that even if we think about it we can't do anythin about it.

But I think I won't give to children. If we pay them they will get used to it! Also, if we pay them that money doesn't go in their pockets (in India), they also have a 'boss' who makes them beg! If they get used to begging they will never want to work when they grow up. Nice reply, thanks!

When I was a kid I used to feel pity when i saw such people and would give them the money I had...but now that i'm grown up, I know its not the right thing to do. My parents would tell me it just encourages what they're doing even more and now I think they were right. People who are really healthy enough to work and earn their daily bread shouldn't be begging but doing some actual work. So now I give money only to people who deserve like people with severe disabilities and all, and i ask people not to encourage begging too.

It is very true, I think. Your parents taught you the right thing. If we pay them we encourage them to beg more! I think I am close to find my answer :) Thanks!

I think the rich people should help the beggars because we should keep in mind that they are the poorest people in the society and that's why they are begging.

Who will agree that he is rich? Even Bill Gates is trying to earn more money! I think it is the richness of our minds that makes us pay the beggars and not how deep out pockets are! If we are rich in our thoughts, it applies to the beggars too. They are poor minds, who don't think that they can work and earn, or they don't want to work and want money just like it grows on trees. Any ways, yours is a reply from the 'rich' and 'human' mind :) Thanks!

Maybe he does not find work. Usually I refuse them, but today I gave some money to a young intelligent girl. She is unemploment just like her parents. I know the feeling when you have no money even for food.

Very well and true! I would rephrase it to asking for 'help' when some intelligent person ask you for money or a job or anything else. These intelligent people who want to work but don't get a job are different than beggars. They constantly search work to employ their skills and intelligence. I think you did a very good thing by 'helping' her. Thanks!

i have encountered so many beggars when i stayed in baguio here in the philippines and i must say most, if not all of them, looked pretty fine! i'm a pretty big picker of beggars, so i choose only the handicapped and some children. not that i don't pity the others, but instead of them doing something legal for a living, they just waste their time and skills.

When a person becomes hungry and begs, then we should not go into the fact that either he is handicapped or not. First off, we should help him/her to fill up his/her belly after that we should come to this question that how that person can engage him/herself to earn some money before becoming hungry next time.

That is an ideal solution which could be applied in an ideal situation. But the fact is something different, It's not just hunger they beg for, many times I offered them food but they wouldn't accept it. Instead they asked me for 'cash' only! Thanks!
