Well me and my cousin grew up together in a small town in Virginia. Eventually we were split up when I moved to Virginia Beach and he to Roanoke, Virginia. He then joined up with the army and got stationed in California. So far from what he has told me, it's the greatest place ever, especially in and around Hollywood. He isn't one to get worked up over things, and when he told be about his exploits in Cali, it seemed like a great place. So I would say stop by Hollywood for a bit, seems to be mucho fun.

Yes, all of L.A. is a must see, my cousins were raised the O.C., so it was always fun visiting them.

I never really liked the Hollywood area that much. It seems like people there think they're better than you, just in my opinion. Orange County and San Diego are a lot more relaxed!

I have been to California a few times since that is where my husband is from. I have only been to San Diego once and that was to the Winchester Mystery House. I enjoyed it but don't know if you like that sort of thing. It's a magnificent home. There is a rumor that it is haunted but I didn't see anything to suggest that. It is an amazing house though.

The Winchester Mystery Mansion isn't in San Diego - it's in San Jose which is a very VERY long way away from San Diego. So if you go to San Diego and are looking for that home, you'll be looking for a long time :)
San Diego is at the very southern tip of California, near the Mexican border.
San Jose is up towards San Francisco in the Northern California area.

You must go to Sea World in San Diego. It is an amazing experience. Probably the prettiet place I have ever been in CA, was in Napa Valley. That is up by San Francisco. If you do go to Napa Valley, tour the vineyards and wineries. It is gorgeous. I would say that is almost like being wrapped up in completely different world. Also, the town of Yreka in northern California has a very neat history, especially from the days of the gold rush. There are lots of historical houses and several museums that are really great. Are you planning on a trip there soon?

when my husband and I went we loved san diego because you can go to the beach with a little drive and go to rodeo drive in the same day. Hollywood is also good. If you want a less expensive stay go to Santa Monica.

I have not been there but I have heard lots of stories about the place. I think ORANGE COUNTY is very good. And I am going to settle down in California only and not anywhere even close to the east.

I have been to San Francisco a few times as well as Daly City , and the cities surrounding those areas. That entire area is very beautiful and would recommend those cities and ones right outside of them as spots to visit. My parents are going to San Diego next week. I have not been there yet but I have heard it is great.

I can't believe someone from San Diego hasn't responded to this yet.
A lot of what you want to see would depend on what you want to do. This time of year is great for visiting the desert and I would suggest going there at least once. In March, there is a grapefruit festival in Borrego Springs.
If you like theme parks, there's always the Zoo, the Wild Animal Park, Sea World, or Legoland (if you have very young kids). You can also visit Balboa Park for all the museums.
I like outdoor stuff. If you do too, and want to stay in town, visit Mission Trails Regional Park. They have a great visitor's center and a variety of hiking/biking/horseback riding trails.
For beaches, I would suggest the one in front or near the Hotel Del Coronado. My favorite, though, is in north county called Fletcher Cove, which is in Solana Beach. That whole coastline from La Jolla to Encinitas is awesome.

GREAT ADVICE Darlene!
I was going to suggest almost everything you did! :)
We try to go down to San Diego at least once a year in the winter when they feed the polar bears special treats for the holidays and they bring in a bunch of ice for them to play on. I only live about 1 1/2 hours north of San Diego so it's not too hard to do when we have the time.
Lots of beautiful places to see and visit down there. I hope you have a good time!
San Diego is about 2 to 3 hours south of Hollywood, depending on traffic, so you might want to keep that in mind if you are wanting to visit San Diego and the Hollywood/LA area.

I went to California earlier this year. I absolutely loved it. I want to move there so badly. We flew into LA. Even getting off the plane and exiting the airport - the scenery was so unlike anything I've ever seen. We stayed in Monrovia/Arcadia which is near Pasadena. It's off historic Route 66. It was beautiful there. The mountains and hills are a breathtaking site. There is a park that we passed where people did Tai Chi every morning. Pasadena was cool. It's a college town and they had all kinds of interesting shops, restuarants, independant movie theaters and book shops. We checked out the La Brea tarpits - which were interesting. We went to Anaheim - it's really nice there as well. They had a really cool park where my boyfriend grew up and it looks like you are on the moon when you play there. Santa Monica was really cool too. They had an open air street market on Saturday where they sold fresh fruits & vegies, plants, herbs, organic stuff, flower salads. We walked down to the pier and they have a roller coaster and ferris wheel there. There are lots of unique shops and restaurants there too. We drove to Malibu from there and went to a surfing only beach (no swimming allowed). The beaches are amazing. You have a view of ocean and mountains all at the same time. We next went to Venice Beach which is completely crazy! Artists and street performers... a gym on the beach out in the open... a vegan fast food stand. We went to Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, and Hollywood. We saw the Oscars...Overall I liked Monrovia/Arcadia the best. Did you go to Cali yet? I would really like to move there. It has it all - Ocean - city - mountains.... I'd like to go back and go to San Francisco and definately to check out the redwood forest.

I visited the States (from Australia) a few years back and stayed in San francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles. We did day trips to Tiawana mexico andall the theme parks (Disneyland, Universal studios etc.) Also San Diego war cemetary and around the docks there. My favourite place was definately Tiawana. I had a ball bartering and the food (and tequila) was great.

There's a lot of places to visit here in California. I lived in San Diego and our tourist spots are SEA WORLD and San Diego Zoo. I guess San Diegans are such an animal lovers. Try to visit Los Angeles...go to Hollywood (Universal Studios), Six Flags, Disneyland in Anaheim. San Francisco is nice too...look for the famous GOLDEN BRIDGE. Have fun!

I am going there next week and I'm very excited. I've never been there... but here are some things that I definately want to see - Venice Beach (I hear there are all kinds of hippies and street performers), the tar pits, the Hollywood Sign... I want to eat in one of those fancy health food restuarants where they put flowers in the salad.
My fiance is taking me to all the places he grew up in, including Anaheim and Riverside. We are also going to Pasadena and Los Angeles. I'm really excited. I'll try to remember to check back and let you know what I saw.
