Family Traditions

My family started a tradition of having a "Yay! cake" every time we reached major milestones or had large achievements. Kind of a way to celebrate. My family was pretty poor and needed something not too expensive that really signified achievements. My mother would make the favorite flavor of whomever made the achievement. It was a simple tradition that really was special to us. I'd love to hear about traditions your family has started that have become special to you. Little traditions or big ones. My husband, son, and I are still a relatively new family and I'd like to have some nifty family traditions in the future.

My mom puts up a Christmas tree on the 20th which is when the one who raised her, who is her grandmother, passed away. We do this, even myself, for this special woman who is no longing with us just to let her know we love and care for her still. She loved my mom enough to raise her since my mom's mom wouldn't. It's a way to keep the tradition since my great grandmother done this event on the 20th anyway.

Wow! that is a neat tradition. Given the fact that I will be losing my parents some time in the relatively near future, I would like to sit down with them while they are still around and figure out a similar tradition for their memories. Thank you for sharing this.

We always are baking something around my house, it's kinda a hobby with me and my kids. I get everybody in on it in some kind a way, we kinda make our own reasons why we need a treat to celebrate something! For birthdays, everyone gets their favorite home cooked meal, and their favorite dessert, which in my sons case is oreo cookie pudding because that is his favorite....i still make a cake for him cause I think it is a tradition! We like to experiment with sugar cookies, and have made letters to signify report card day, heart shaped things when someone does something special....any excuse is good to celebrate with a good dessert or cake I say!! I think everyone who reads your discussion should make a favorite cake or dessert just for the "Yay!" of it!!

Oh yummy! We had ham for Christmas every year. And of course turkey on Thanksgiving. Now you have me craving honey-baked goodness.

That is just wonderful. I wish my family had a tradition like that. What a morale booster too. Unfortunately my family really doesn't have any traditions. And to me that is sad. Actually I have come to realize that my family is quite "disfunctional" I planned to begin foster care and adopt a special needs child back in 2000. But I became very ill and am still trying to get my life back to the way it was. Now I am 46 so time is slipping away as far as starting a family.. but I still have hope. I think that would be my first tradition....I love it.

It's funny how many people want to start families right now when there are so many families in need of just an extra hand or two. I hope you regain your health soon and find the family of your heart. When I get stressed out, I am more than willing to pack my family up and send it to you!

Oh what a wonderful idea your mother had! A "Yay" cake I like that! I have begun teaching my 11 year old some of the same recipes my mom taught me and her mom taught her..Lots of families have thier own spin on different dishes and my daughter and I have also created some new ones that I hope she will one day share with her children too.. Another tradition we have is playing board games or cards as a family on Sunday evenings...It's just a nice tradition and time to spend as a family...

Cooking together traditional recipes and having a set gaming night are both good ideas. Thanks for sharing! I've been thinking about putting together a small cookbook of recipes my family has created or cooks a WHOLE lot.

We started a tradition of a yearly vacation to Disney World in late August to celebrate the last hurrah to summer before the kids go back to school about 4 years ago now. There are some great deals that time of year and we plan to go now as a tradition. We also started camping every Memorial Day weekend almost 5 years ago. We all look forward to both and save all year for the Disney trip. There's something nice about having an annual trip-new memories mix with old memories and it's always one of the times we are all together without distractions.

Oooh, that's neat. Maybe we can do something similar when my son starts school. Or maybe start having a set vacation time each year. That would be nice.

What a wonderful idea! It is not only an inexpensive treat, but one which you would be having anyway, but given a special meaning and made special for the one being honoured. We never had any special treats in my family, not even for birthdays. The first birthday party I ever had was one the young people gave me for my 50th birthday. In our family, we always encouraged learning and achievement and were rich in praise, but something like a Hey! Cake would have been a brilliant idea. I will suggest it to my sons for their families.

It really made it special because we weren't allowed to have many sweets in our household. So not only to get sweets but your favorite kind too, was wonderful for us. I hope your sons' families enjoy it.

That was such a sweet tradition:) No wonder you treasure it so much. We didn't have family traditions as such, but we did celebrate when good things happened. We went out for dinner, cut a cake on b'days and anniversaries, had small parties, gave gifts. Nothing out of the ordinary, but these constituted good family times.

Our family has never partied much. My best friend in high school had a family that partied each time anyone had a big achievement and I was always envious of his family. We could never afford to throw parties. Over time I have come to appreciate that my family did the best they could do for us and loved us with their whole hearts. My parents are awesome individuals. Sounds like yours are/were too. Keep enjoying and rejoicing. :-)

So maybe next time he gets good grades or gets a bonus form his boss for excellent work (depending on his age), you can have his favorite "yay cake" the next day. :-)

I'm going to have to find a way to keep my girlfriend from reading this thread. She's a pastry chef and always looking for a reason to make a cake. We're a new family also and don't have much in the way of traditions. There's a few things that we make it a point to do together every now and then, like make meals that take more than one person to make and combine everyone's talents. My talents end at browning ground meat, but it doesn't mean we can make homemade lasagna together.

Let your girlfriend read it and ship the extra cakes down to Austin. They will be put to good use, I promise! :-) My husband and I are like that with omelets. He does all the chopping and I combine and cook.

Sometimes she did that or wrote what the achievement was like "All 'A's " . It tasted all the sweeter for it.

Baking and cooking together always builds strong family ties. That's the main reason I want a large kitchen when I build my own home, so we can bond while making delicious treats.

And what if more than one person meets a milestone at the same time? I used to buy my kids gifts when they came home with good report cards - usually movies. But now with report cards coming home so close to Christmas I don't think they need another present, and I don't have the money to spend. Baking a cake is a fabulous idea. I have to think about doing that here. I have been known to buy a nice card congratulating them and telling them how proud I am of them.

We usually have a lot of good cake in that case. In our house they didn't last long anyway.

Family traditions and formalities as well as informalities are very good, infact built in with every family or particular group of ppl and this changes from time to time as well as place to place (a long list ...)

*nods* yes, that is the nature of a family tradition. what I was asking for was: what are some of your family traditions that make things special to you?

Oh, your "Yay Cake" story is so adorable! I wish that my family had had a tradition as lovely as that! I am trying to think of anything that my family did when I was growing up, but I really can't remember anything special. I always had quite good grades and there wasn't really anything extraordinary that I did outside of that to have earned any extra acknowlegement.

Did you do anything in particular to celebrate birthdays or just to break up the monotony?

My family also has a tradition of visiting a specific temple every year on new year's day. It is a simple tradition but all members of the family are expected to be present there no matter what. any member staying in any corner of the world is expected to be there. I love the tradition as it gives me an opportunity to meet everyone atleast once in a year. and i definitely love all the goodies that all the aunts prepare for the kids when they come home.
