Sardines - a great source of calcium.

The calcium content in 3 ounces of sardines (with skin and bone) is about 320-450 mg. But you have to eat them in order to get this benefit. Personally, I love sardines. I have eaten them since I was a kid. My favorite is the ones packed in oil, but have been eating more of the water packed sardines. Less oil, less calories. Many eat them on crackers, but I like them right out of the can. Nummy.

I did not know that sardines are a good source of calcium! But I can't eat them. I do not like the bones. I just can't seem to eat them because of the bones. If they were able to make them without the bone, then I would like them. I do like smoked canned oysters in sunflower oil though!!! Have you tried that?

Sounds good to me,but my hubby would find it gross with the skin and bones. Same with mackeral and salmon. He likes the fish, hates the bones, and he needs calcium worse than I do, because I drink milk. I was going to ask how you fix them. Side note, probably not really on topic, but my Mom regarded sardines as a medicine kit for sick cats. It was always good for whatever ailed them.

I am too picky to even try this. I don't eat tuna or any other sort of fish. I just can not stand the smell.

My pantry is never without dozens of tins of sardines, some in oil, some in ketchup and others in brine. I love them for a snack during the day or before bedtime, in between two slices of toast. For the sardines in brine, I usually sprinkle a few drops of cider vinegar on them just to give them an additional flavour.

YUCK!!!! I hate sardines. Well, I think I do anyway. LOL I cant get past the smell. My husband loves them and I cant even get around him when he has just eat them. I acturally throw up!. I think I will be forced to get my calcium elsewhere. Unless...you can eat extra for me??

Bones have lots of calcium too! I'm sure if you packed bones in oil they would preserve well. Oh, Butterfly, my belly is heaving after reading this one!~Donna (the little green blurb says to be as descriptive as possible - this is one time MyLot does not want me to be that descriptive LOL)

Fish, of any kind, is one of the few foods I am fussy with .. I hate the skin, cannot bear the bones however fine and simply cannot bear the smell of fish cooking .. I know it's good for me ... I know I really ought to eat fish .. The thing that puts me off most is knowing that fish are gutted whilst still alive, that is gross .. some poor fish don't even get as far as the ship before meeting their end .. as the nets are pulled in the fish at the bottom are literally 'chipped' alive as they are pushed through the netting by the weight of the fish above them .. we don't treat animals like this so why is it allowed for fish ??

I used to eat sardines out of the can as well when I was a kid! In oil, that is. I thought it was so cool to tell people that I ate and liked them. Most of them would say, 'yuck', and I'd say, 'oh well'...LOL I used to eat them on saltines.

Yes sardines are very nutritive. Thanks for providing the detailed info about the calciuom content. I like the ones in oil. The one packed in water are not that tasty.

hello.Yes, you are correct, sardines are a GREAT source of calcium. Now, if only I could bring myself to eat them. For some reason I just can't get past the smell! Did you know that salmon is also a great source of calcium? As you stated with the sardines, you must eat the little backbone that is in the can! I crush the little vertebra into the salmon and add an egg and some crushed saltines and a diced onion and make salmon patties. YUM! Of course I like fresh salmon too!

I have a problem with the smell too! I found out that canned mackerel also has good calcium content and I don't find the smell to be so strong. They also come in some of the "flavors" that sardines do, so I switched for those instead :) Thanks for the reminder on the salmon patties... my grandmother used to make those for me and I haven't had them in years! :)

I like to eat sardines. What I usually do is I get the sauce and put some egg on it then am going to fry it. Another recipes is am going to get the sauce then put some flour and spices to sardines then am going to fry it in oil. Simple things for a simple dish. Its really high in nutrients and very good for our health.

its ok to love eating sardines but you must also know the bad benifits that it might contain. as we all know sardines is place in cans. it has also preservatives that might cause some problems in your health. maybe you must start to minimize eating sardines because eventhough it is rich in calcium it has also bad benifitsl.
