I'm not sure about the pain but I would think the animal would be put to sleep. My nephew had one put in his dog and the dog got lost and was found because of the chip so it is worth it.

The microchip does not cause any pain. My dog didn't even seem to feel the needle when the chip was injected.

According to my AVID brochure, the chip fits through a hyperdermic needle, so I would imagine it feels the same as getting a vaccination. You can even put it in fish, though I don't understand how you would lose a fish.
