noisy neighbors

Do you have really noisy neighbors? How do you deal? I live in an apartment, and my neighbor across the hall is horribly noisy, and when we ask to her to be quiet, she temporarily obliges, but then begins her excessively loud music again not too long after the initial request. She gets mad when we play with our dog and he barks (rarely, ask anyone else), but she seems to think her noise is ok. She has her radio blaring CONSTANTLY, and I can hear the WORDS in my apartment. Nothing works. What do you suggest? I think we should have a choice, in our own home, whether or not to listen to music. Ugh.

I agree with you. We make an effort to keep our noise down and think our neighbors should do the same. If they are too loud, then we go ask them to turn their music or whatever down. Most neighbors don't care because they want their quiet as well. Our upstairs neighbor had a bad habit of running his washing machine at 2:30AM! After the second time I told the management and they spoke with him about the matter. Hasn't happened since. Where we live if you get report for an offence and get reported 3 more times on the same offence they can evict you. I am also not beyond calling the police on distrubing the peace if things get out of hand (the management actually prefers us to do this).Just because you live in an apartment, doesn't mean that you should have to listen to other people's noise.

Yes, I live upstairs and I try to run my washing machine and vacuum during the day so I don't bother the neighbors downstairs. I'm sure sometimes I get on their nerves, though. lol.

I try to do the same. I even make sure my sons friends are going by 5:30pm to not bother the folks that are coming home from work around that time. I am sure we bother our downstairs neighbor some, but he is a single guy and isn't home much.

I try to keep quiet at night too (vacuuming and such) but if my neighbour down stairs has been particularly noisy and annoying I sometimes get spiteful and whip out the vacuum early in the morning and clean the room above his room

Yes! Gosh yes, in fact I wrote about it in my blog, a terrible incident happened about a week ago. We have 2 neighbours who like to drink together but they get very loud and aggresive when they do and its so annoying. Last week the police were called at 12:30am for music and then again at 5am for fighting/arguing and one of them got arrested. I think its really about respect for your neighbours, our neighbour directly below (one of the drinkers, not the one that got arrested) gets angry when people wake him up but thinks its ok to put his music on incredibly loud... so loud that I can't hear my tv or people in my own flat! Recently (after the incident last week) he seems to be better. I think the police visit really rattled him. If you've requested many times for your neighbour to turn their music down I would take the next step. Are you able to complain to your builing manager (I'm not sure if thats the right department... here when you live in a flat/apartment you have a body corporate who you can complain too) and then if they still keep it up I would start calling the police.

I used to respond to noise when I lived in an apartment by taking a broom and banging on the ceiling. The upstairs people were always noisy. They would get the hint most of the time. Our next door neighbors here are ok most of the time. The lady yells at her kid all of the time. She is pretty rude. I guess it could be worse and it could be better too. Since you are in an apartment, complain to the manager. Let them deal with it.

I never liked living in apartments so I bought a mobile home, it was cheaper than a house and when I finally found land I could afford I got that and moved my mobile home here. It's not alot but it's quiet and I rarely hear any of my neighbors.

Same problem when I was living in a apartment and the people next door kept playing very loud rock music (which I hate) so I put the "1812 overture" on at top volume. If you have never heard this, it includes cannons and church bells! They got the message all right.

Oh yes, I have noisy neighbors. I live in an upstairs apartment, and the family that lives below us has 3 little kids! We constantly hear them running around and yelling and them getting in trouble! lol. Thankfully, we are moving into a house next weekend, so we won't have to deal with that anymore!

You take a house for granted when you live in one don't you? I'm moving to a house after living in apartments for 3 years and I can't wait!

It's been happening like this for over a year. I am tolerant, or it would have been solved by now.

I don't know how you stop this. I guess talk to the landlord. But my husband had this happen in his apartment. The men living up stairs got into an arguement and started screaming at each other in the hall. He said he just stayed in his apartment. He has moved out of there. Good luck!

I use to have really noisy neighbors that I called the cops on several times. Now we live in a new apartment and it is sooo nice and quiet. Of course, you're going to have some noise sometimes but thank god it's no longer parties at 1AM waking me up lol

Well I live in an apt. also. I will give any of my neighbors the benefit of the doubt. However, if I am being disturbed and I have asked nicely to keep it down and they still don't respect it, My next move would be the leasing office. I know within your lease there should be guidelines and rules while living on their property. Sometimes it takes the leasing office to send them a letter to say they are disturbing other tenants. Sometimes you just can't reason with people on your own, but I feel if you are paying for where you live everyone has to want to get along, some don't such as your neighbor. Try the leasing agent. Don't let them run you out of your apartment. Good luck to you....

We have a few like that, but we keep our peace by ignoring them. One day we hope to move. Sometimes you have to act like they aren't even there. Good luck

I've had some pretty noisy neighbors in the past too. I live in a college town, so a lot of the people that rent here are students, and there isn't much to do around here but drink. So I always have the coming in drunk in the middle of the night yelling at each other neighbors. There's only so much you can do if she won't listen to you about the issue. I'd suggest talking to the landlord if at all possible though.

It's hard when you live in an apartment, because you always get at least one inconsiderate neighbor who is noisy. Do they play their music loud late at night? I don't think there is much you can do if they do it during the day. But if they are loud at night you should contact your landlord or apartment manager.

We do have some noisy neighbors sometimes especially when there are occasions like anniversaries and birthdays. In our country, we just let the noisy people have a good time especially if there are special occassions. But in your case I guess it would be better if you ask the person to be quiet or else you will ask the authority to tell her to do so.

We also have a lot of those. My partner and I made a bargain by living temporarily in an area that's rather a little cramped, but at least we could walk to work. It saves a lot. But the neighbors' kids can give you hell. They're just screaming all over the place. And we used to do night shift so the neighbors can give you a hard time by talking out loud or playing their tvs in a really high volume. We learned to cover up our ears for some time. heh. :)
