Should people on mylot use a pic of themselves on their profile / avatar ?

Some people use famous people's pictures for their avatar / profile. Do you think that is ok? Do you think people should use a real picture of themselves in their profile? I have to admit it is kind of confusing when a man will use a female model's picture as their picture. It makes you think it is a woman who is writing. What do you think about this?

It is ethically wrong to use another person's person on the Internet without the express permission of that person. I feel you can use your personal pics, in fact mylot should encourage people to use their personal pic or use a symbol instead of using somebody's real picture that is violation. If you use someone else pics and they discover they can sue you if they chose to. It is illigal to doso

I couldn't have said it better! Mylot says that you are not allowed to use pictures that do not belong to you. It is very illegal to use someone elses picture as your own. I see people on here using pictures of babies that are obviously not theirs...if that were my kid I would be after them! Makes it seem like they are a pedophile or something. And using pictures of famous people? What is wrong with you? According to the terms you can't even use a picture of your favorite person or place with a note stating that that is why it is there. Only pictures that YOU PERSONALLY own are permitted. As for using a picture of yourself, some people value their privacy and should not be forced to use a picture of themselves. That is why places like Yahoo made cartoon avatars available for everyone to make. A picture of a place you took or of your pet or anything like that is perfectly acceptable.

I wouldn't put a photo of myself on any forum, I think it is a privacy issue.

I can respect that. What do you think about people using photos that aren't of them though? Like other people, especially famous people?

I don't have a problem with it. Maybe they just admire the person whose picture they are using. It would be nice to put a face with the person who is posting but I don't have a picture of myself on my account...and I don't really want to. But I don't use a picture of someone who is famous either. The picture is one I took at one of our local parks... :)

People may not want to use their own pics as avatars for the most different reasons and we can't blame them. Me personally, I wouldn't use my photo, though I wouldn't use somebody else's either. But I believe it's kind of personal business what image to use as avatar.

I didn't use my photo as my avatar to to keep a lower profile. I don't know if it matters or not or even helps. It was for so that people skimming through looking at photos then picking you because you're female to send vulgar crap to is why I was trying to keep a lower profile. I am not really bothered that much though, I did upload one photo of myself.

well, if you want others to know who you are, then post your picture. personally, i don't post my picture. i'd rather post an avatar which is somehow related to what i do or what i like. like my avatar now, it is kardel sharpeye which is my favorite character in dota. but i don't post a picture of a woman to avoid confusion.

i guess i cannot see any problem to that... it is their free will and as long as mylot does not prohibit it, it is just fine

I think people should have to use a picture that represents them not necessarily a picture of themselves.i understand why alot of people do not use a picture of themselves ya never know who is on here.i use my own photo but alot of people are iffy about using a photo of themselves and i understand why.their are to many nuts out there in this world.

I agree with that. I don't think people should have to post of pic of themself, but they should pick an image of something that relates to them - something they like, what they do, etc... but not of other people who haven't given their permission.

I personally don't care what people use as their avatar here. I personally use my picture but if others want to use something else that they like I think they can do what they wish. Half the time I don't even look at peoples avatars anyway. But I assure you this picture is mine... I am a real man, that looks just like this picture.

I use my own pic coz I dont see a threat that i shouldn'st post it. but once i sense something dangerous in posting my real pic I'll just change it. But as of now i think its safe to use your own pic so people can see who they're communicating with.

I don't think that it is right for people to use pictures of anyone other than themselves for thier profile pictures anywhere. I feel like if I were a famous person I would not want my picture plastered all over people's myLot and MySpace profiles especially if they were putting my picture where theirs should be. I don't think there is anything wrong with using a picture of yourself. I don't feel less safe because my picture is on my online profile on various internet sites.

I think people should use what ever avatar picture they want, as long as it isn't disgusting, rude or offensive to anyone else. I don't like posting pics of myself all over the place. I don't even like using my pic on facebook where I know who all of my "friends" are. People shouldn't feel forced or obliged to post themselves on the internet, especially on a site like this where you really don't know who you're talking to. People should have their privacy.

well I dont really care what people use but I do understand what you mean about assuming people's gender from their photo.. most people are worried about putting their real photos up and I must admit I have only just put mine on.. I didnt want to put it up untill I was sure what sort of site this was..

I think it is up to the person whether they want to use a picture of themselves or not on here. Not everybody feels comfortable or safe showing their picture online, especially with a lot of sick people on the net. If they are okay with it then great but if not then that is okay too and can use a different picture. I personally would not use a picture of another person on my profile or avatar.

To me it doesn't matter, this is the internet a bit of privacy is required when using it. I don't want the whole world knowing what I look like. Why should they, it doesn't make a difference in what I'm saying. Why should it matter if I have a picture of me or of my dog? Does it make my words any less valuable? No. To me it doesn't really matter one way or another.

I think if you don't use your real picture as a avatar you should have it somewhere in your pictures. Using a famous person is kinda cheesy, I mean we see their pictures all the time. I like to know who I am chatting with.

I think my dorky picture is close to the real me. I am a big clown. I would like to know who I am talking with, so my vote is "YES".
