Why Is Swearing So Common?

Words such as "crap" or "sucks" were once inappropriate, but are now used in television commercials. Bad language is not just restricted to R-rate movies any more. Swears and dirty words seem to be flying out of teenagers, co-workers and television shows. Why is it becoming more common day by day../.?/

dirty words are words that used to express feeling, emotion of anger / dislike. But nowdays the child seeing that words on the television, or even from their own parents becomes reluctant, thus using that words not only to express anger but also to attracts attention to them. It ussually happends during adolescence, to build their own character, expressing freedom, etc.

it is just more common and acceptable now....society isn't as shocked or bothered by it as we used to be...however if you hear it from a child ...then we find it appalling...but if they hear it so often then they think it is acceptable..it is a vicious circle!!!

When you ask me if a word alone is a swear word. I will say yes or no based on how my area percieves it or the foster care system. In the system Shut - up is considered a swear word, Crap, sucks, etc... .. Because people still sees those as swearwords. Me personally? To me Swearing is NOT the words you use but how you use the words. If you state a word with negative and harmful intention, then I see it as a swear word, if you are venting and letting the words fly when no one else is around I see that as venting, although there are times, I was caught venting like this, and got myself into some doo doo ... I used to never swear, a child, or a teenager, other then if the words were part of humor, or if I was singing a song. Then to me that was not swearing... It was not to hurt people. I think one of the problems now is people think Swearing is just words... I disagree with this. Swearing is not the words you use but how you use the words. So if you say... Man, That was "Crap" .. To me that is not swearing, But if you were to say So and So is a piece of crap, or so and so is crap! or Call them Crap to their face, I would see it as swearing. I see name calling in any negative form as swearing, but if two people are having a name calling contest to be goofy with eachother than, I do not see that as swearing. I do not see actors or actresses saying those words as swearing as they are playing a character... I think more and more are starting to view it as I do, and this maybe why it is becoming more common. Shut - Up is seen as a swear word around her. Which is funny, as when I was younger everyone used to say it, now all of sudden we are not suppose to say it. Meanwhile in your area the opposite is going on.... It is still restricted in movies but like a G rated movie can have 1 or 2 .. Pg 13 can have some but it must be limited... R is unlimited... And it even gets more confusing as the movies Rating system has changes... What bothers me more than the swearing is language used for hatred and spreading hatred, or deliberatle to hurt.. That bugs me, and to me that is also what I personally considered swearing, or negative misuses of words or name calling, for a none fun, or a positive purpose. - DNatureofDTrain

I don't like hearing "shut up" or "you're stupid". But there's so much real bad language out there that I can't stand it! I remember when it was a really big deal when Hawkeye said SOB on MASH. Now they can talk about the most graphic things right on primetime network shows. There's so much disgusting stuff on that I can't sit and watch things with my DH and SS15. I know he's heard it all before, but it just feels wrong to me. Radio and TV. It's all about the same now.
