My wife and I had this discussion and I told her that I wouldn't want to win the lottery. She thinks I'm crazy, but I told her that if I were to win the lottery I would never know if I had what it takes to make it on my own. Am I really crazy?

Looking at it from that prespective I agree with you. What is to make it on one's own. You could use the money you win and make something bigger out of it and then you would know if you could have made it on your own in the first place.

Well for me, making it on my own means I took the abilities and knowledge I've been given or earned and worked hard to become successful using those gifts. If I had this big old pile of money, I think I would have all teh security in the world, but I would never know, when push comes to shove, what my true value is.

Truly understand the problem there... I am too lazy and I would be the same, unless it comes to the last minute I don't do things and having all that money that last moment might never come.

You aren't crazy at all just because your wife does not think like you. I understand but wouldn't you really want to have a life of comfort and relaxation than to be struggling and hoping to to be a success?

i do want a life of comfort and relaxation -- but I want to earn it, not just be some person who lucked into it by picking a few numbers.

It is not whether or not you win the lottery, it is how you treat money. You will make it on your own if you have the desire to do so. The odds of you winning the lottery are out of this world. Think about how you will create your own methods for making it on your own. You will appreciate your earnings much more. Instead of waiting to hit the lottery, move forward with plans to find work or a business that excites you.

Well you're not crazy - no - it is your life and your entitled to think what you like and live it how you choose. But personally I would LOVE to win the Lottery! Not to buy flash houses, and designer cothes and fast cars and yachts - that really doesn't interest me - but to have the security of knowing that if ever I was too old or sick to work, or if my chldren or family needed help - it would all be taken care of with no worries. Also - there are so many charities that would benefit from just a small donation from a Lottery win - sick children, cancer wards, local hospitals, animal charities - whatever you care about you could help out. I would love that.

There's a lot to be said for your intentions! I think you are probably more noble than I am. I'd just be concerned that my whole life would then revolve around this pile of money.

I didn't even think about that aspect of this. But you're right. You'd never really know who your friends are 9at least those who came after you won) It really makes me think about celebrities -- it's no wonder they get a little crazy sometimes.

I don't think your crazy at all, I think that other people would look at you differently and try and take advantage of you if you were to win. I play but I have decided that if I ever won, I would collect it anonymously through a lawyer and put it in the bank, just use the interest and my kids would have their own little nest egg when they got old enough.

No you are not crazy....that is just your oppinion...money can make you dumb or in some ways depending on how it is used can make you smart...but then again if you won the lottery every under the son would be looking for a handout...you would find relative you knew you never had all of a sudden....but then again u could always by an island and live there and not have to deal with that...

you know everything money can buy would be wonderful -- but what about all the things that money can't buy? Thanks for the not crazy comment too -- i was beginning to think I would need to be committed.

Not wanting to win the lottery is OK. Refusing the award would be something else!! lol Winning the lottery, for a responsible person, is a big responsibility. OK when the holiday is over and the champagne gets boring you have the challenge of making that money work. Work for you, your family and your Grandchildren to come perhaps... Then you may have pet projects that you wish to give a boost to, charities, youth projects, friends working their butt off to get a new business running...the list goes on. A lottery win can be a licence to indulge, or it can be a huge responsibility. It depends who you are.

that's an excellent way of putting it. I've had the opportunity to work alongside some extremely wealthy people, and I would observe them in action. One person in particular was taking phone calls all day long, and every call was about money. That would get old to me.

Maybe a little bit crazy if your only motive was that you will never know what it takes to make and own it. You probably in your life time has made a lot of money but you don't have because, maybe not properly managed, no sacrifice was made in form of an investment that would have made you rich. The most single important problem faced by rich people is how to manage what they have. If you win a lottery, you have a huge problem of management, security, investment, scammers and thieves to worry about. The mark of a man is the ability to manage what you have and own.

That's true. I like that statement at the end in particular. Thanks you for your intelligent comments. They are appreciated!

i do think you are crazy! so what if money means security...wudnt that mean u wud have a safe place for ur family? wudnt u want tht? yeh fair enuff some people do change when they have money, but u can make sure tht doesnt happen, its not tht diffcult

Well if the choice is between destitute and lottery winner -- that's one thing. but I'm more talking about the desire to succeed through work rather than luck.

The principle in the lottery is that if you win, somebody else looses. Giving to others is something that makes us happy and the lottery is the complete opposite. If you work for the money, you will appreciate it much more and be careful where you put it and not throw it away on some things you do not really need. I never buy any lottery tickets but I am searching a decent income which gives me freedom and enables me to help others. I have some interesting business things going on which you can find on my website. I think your thinking is healthy, not crazy at all.

I'm not sure if other people lose, except maybe that dollar or so they plunked down for the ticket. I think that if I win the lottery, I would lose. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense really -- I don't even know if it makes sense to me -- It's just how I feel about it.

There was just a story in my local newspaper about a lottery winner. He won 315 million on Christmas 1 or 2 years ago. Now he has no money left and is in a whole bunch of legal trouble. Some people could handle winning the money while others can't. Even if you have a lot of money there are still things you can strive for that would be a easier if money was not an issue. There are many causes you could fight for.

I know. it's amazing how many lottery winners are broke in a short time. There's a book on the subject too. I just think with that much coming so quickly, people in general aren't really sure how to cope with it.

No you are just someone that was raised that there is no easy money. I wish i could be that way, but i guess i kind of am because i do play the lottery i just say if i would win, but i guess you have to play to win right?

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I think it's kind of about respect too. I just wouldn't want to be known as that lucky guy who was given everything. Even if I'm not, I just think that people would look at me that way. Now, I don't care too much about what others think -- unless it's my reputation. Maybe I'm just being stupid, but that's how I feel.

Winning the lottery does not mean you do not have what it takes to make it on your own. It simply allows you to pursue you goals sooner. The funds can be used to finance your plan be it your own business, scholarship, real estate, whatever. If you have what it takes, you will be more successful sooner. If you don't have what it takes your endeavor will crash and burn. Money in and of itself if no more good or bad than say... a car. You can use it to drive someone to the doctor or use it to kill someone. Money only magnifies what you already are. It allows generous kind-spirited people to be moreso. You can take money and do an Oprah and open a school. It allows mean-spirited people to be moreso and they would use the money to demean or control people. Me. I'm an adventurous spirit. I'd use part of the money to be a space tourist. The lottery is the only way I could afford to do that. BP

That's a good point. And I guess in a way, im making a mistake by equating money with success. but with what I am trying to do with my life, money is one measure of success. I once was looking at a website that lists the world's richest people and was surprised by how many of them were self-made. That's what I want, not just some windfall that happened out of luck.

I agree with all of the posters; however, if you won the money you could donate it to some worthy causes in your community. Several of my friends won money in the lottery and donated books to one of the local elementary schools because the school didn't have enough books, so students couldn't take a book home to read. If I won the lottery, I would donate it to several organizations in my city that use every dollar helping people, so its not used in a poor way.

I think so to. You might have good intentions, but I think t would take a very strong person to handle and curb their own desires with that much money.
