Last night I watched American Idol for the first time!

I was shocked at how the judges treated the people auditioning. How rude! There were a few people with very tender feelings that cried and cried when they were dismissed so rudely. Constructive criticism is certainly a good thing, but they could at least be a little more kind and understanding. I understand that the judges are pretty big in the show business industry, but that is no excuse for treating people so badly. To laugh with they are trying so hard! I noticed the ones they chose to go to Hollywood were the most confident, and yes, the most talented. However, I also noted that the ones in the armed forces were almost immediately accepted regardless of their talents.

I love watching American Idol, especially in the first episodes of the season when they auditons are shown. The judges are pretty rude, but people that audition know this (or should, if they've watched the show), so they should be able to take the criticism. The criticism and the personalities of the judges is half of the show. I'm pretty sure a lot of it is "staged" anyway. But, who cares-it's great entertainment! My favorite last night was Kenneth (the bush baby) and his friend. I felt so bad for those guys, my heart went out to the both of them. They really seemed like nice guys, even though they were strange.

I don't feel bad for most people. I blame the families and friends of these people. They should tell the person that they can't sing. A lot of these people are delusional and can't sing. If anything I feel sorry for the judges who have to sit there for hours hearing maybe only one or two good people amongst thousands of bad singers. Some times I can't believe what the judges say, but I still like them.

Lol... just watched it for the first time? Yeah, I don't watch American Idol quite often too. I only watched the second and the fourth American Idol, I guess. I just watch for fun and I didn't even remember who won in those series...lol... and yes, Simon is really something. But I think their community has accepted Simon as what he is and they now don't mind of his rudeness anymore.

I'm watching American Idol right now. I see what you're saying, but that's just kind of the way the show is. People shouldn't audition if they can't handle the criticism.

I've watched AI since the very first episode of the first season. This kinda frustrates me because I've missed it due to 2 1/2 inches of ice on everything. Sounds like alot of people were blown away from all the horriblely mean comments.

I have been watchin American Idol since the first season, and they way the judges are is why I watch it. I love the auditions. Its so funny to see people get up there thinking they can sing and then they sound horrible! Simon Cowell is the best, hes the biggest reason I watch it. Its so funny cause hes so assinine. These people know going in that they are going to be insulted if they suck! Its all part of the show!! I myself would never audition because I wouldnt want to be embarassed. Tender hearted people shouldnt try out if they cant take it.

Has it ever been any different. Truthfully though, I only ever watch it for the ones being belittled and then the ones who get through stage one not making stage 2 and then crying as if their life is now over.

I think the auditions are funny. I thik those who go up there are asking for it. I'm sure most of them know they can't sing, but want their 15 minutes of fame.

It is needed to get hidden gem out of one, if they wont become harsh then the people will take them for granted and would present there best.

I agree with you, sometimes the judges are really rude (specially simon). I remember there's one guy who audition and he compred him to a monkey. That's really uncalled for. But maybe, it's also a part of their strategy to attract viewers to watch the show. And I guess most of the aspiring idols already have seen the past American Idol season so they should all be aware and prepared at how rude the judges are.

I think they're a bit harsher than they need to be. Before the first season of American Idol came about, my local tv station did an interview with Simon. He basically said that no one should even try that almost no one is good enough. I agree with him, a little. Most people really don't have what it takes to be a superstar, but someone's gotta try. Otherwise, none of the really great singers won't be discovered. Simon really does know what makes an Idol; he knows the recording business very well. But, they don't have to be so incredibly harsh.

I think one of the reasons that people watch it is because they are so mean to the disillusioned ones. I personally don't like it, and I'm going to hold off on watching regularly until they get past the auditions, probably like final 12 time. I just think they are so rude on the show.

Yes. I think they should criticize in a kind and gentle manner so it would not hurt the feelings of the contestants. They always keep their thoughts harsh and strict, many a times rude that broke other person's heart. They should be a little polite so they understand the result and don't get upset and sad at the same time. There is a way of saying and doing anything and I think they should understand this.

Yes I do agree with you on this the stand the judges display unruly behavior and are a bunch of piercing critics but what I feel is that should these participants get lucky then then when they do join the industry they will be treated the same so they must be training them for the worst.

I posted a very detailed discussion on that very subject. I was also appalled at Simon Cowell's hurtful remarks. 90% Percent of the people auditioned were terrible and my ears were saying "mute the sound".

I watch the show and I know how they are also but I don't understand why people would go on there and make a fool of themselves. But I don't like how all 3 judges were laughing at the ones who were terrible. That's not right and they shouldn't laugh like that. Also they let them go on too long. If they don't like them they shouldn't let them go on so long just to humiliate themselves. Any other time Simon usually stops them as soon as he hears how terrible they are but last night I think it was or the night before he didn't stop this one guy and he was terrible. Simon has always been rude but Paula and Randy didn't used to be this bad. They are getting as bad as Simon. I still love the show and will continue to watch. :)
