What occupation requires you to know how to do fractions?

After finishing school, did you ever have to do fractions? What career, other than a math teacher, is knowing how to do fractions useful? The students that I work with are always asking me this question. After finishing school, I never used fractions again until I started working at my current job. I am thinking maybe someone in accounting or a chemist might use fractions. What is your opinion?

I have had over 100 different kinds of jobs and everyone of them used fractions. I will list just a few here. Forester, retail managment, restuarant management, cashier, paralegal, office clerk, tree planter, dog groomer, deli manager, etc. All jobs use fractions for one reason or the other. I tried to list professional jobs as well as the minimum no where jobs. it is amazing how many times a day you have to use a fraction to get the exact amount of something for a customer.

Maybe they do, I am not sure either. I have not use fractions forever either since after I was done with school. I am studying nursing right now and I remember one of the classes that I have to take has some fractions in it. I think we have to know that for when we have to measure how much pills we suppose to give a patient or something like.

I would think it is vital as a nurse to know exactly how much medicine you should put in those IV's in the ICUs.

Okay, don't laugh at this one, but it is the truth. The only time I use fractions, is when I am calculating the weight of a roast as to how long to bake it. And,when I make breads and modify the receipe, I use fractions. Are you laughing? You asked, so that's what I had to say about fractions.

I was not laughing as you should do what works for you and makes it easier to cook. I rarely cook but would probably need to do something like that in order for the food to come out right. After posting this topic, I realized that fractions are used in cooking and in recipes. Good answer. :-)

If a person works an hourly wage, they use fractions to calculate their hours. If a person did not calculate their hours, they could be cheated. A cashier uses fractions, just because it is in a form os cents...a fraction is not whole. So 25 cent is 25/100 A auditor uses fractions. I didn't have an accounting degree but I worked as an auditor and we had to use fractions all the time! A cook, baker, or anyone in the culinary arts uses fractions. If you have to double up a recipe, you have to know how much to add those fractions up to. But then we also bake at home. So, I know I use fractions just being a mom and having to cook. A mechanic uses fractions...sure some tools show the metric measurement...but there are also fractions on some tools. A construction worker, carpenter, and architect uses fractions. If they didn't, I would hate to think about all the lopsided tables, chairs and houses there would be. ha ha I am sure there are a lot more people that I could think of that uses fractions...but I am sure if we all stopped to think about it, we would realize how often we really do use fractions. After all...do you always buy a pound of meat from the deli? And if you only buy a 1/4 pound, are you going to pay whatever they charge you? Or if it looks wrong, will you figure out what the price should be about in your head?

I definitely did not realize how often fractions are being used as we know decimals are used a lot and other forms of math. I definitely see cooking using fractions as I see recipes on containers and boxes all the time and accountants deal with numbers. Now, I have to get my students to learn how to do fractions. :-)

Regularly. Not the tough ones, but there are fractions in cooking -- a third of a cup, half of a teaspoon and the like. I also work percents like fractions. For example if I want to tip 20% (which I usually do) I just add 1/5 of the check. Then there are "half-off sales" and such. As for the more difficult functions associated with fractions, maybe engineering? Not really sure... Never used them in a professional setting.

I definitely agree that cooking involves fractions. I remember seeing fractions in the recipes and on the boxes. Some people are chefs which is a professional setting in my opinion.

You use fractions all the time in real life. Sharing pizzas, sharing bills, percentages, etc, etc. You have to know them for life, period. I have heard this argument for calculus and geometry but fractions? Fractions are very useful.

I wondered too about calculus and geometry and how much those get used in jobs, other than maybe scientists. It is amazing how much fractions are used as I know I do not think about it much other than helping my students learn how to do fractions.

I guess geometry might come into play with pizza. Maybe you have your choice of a few pieces that are left and you're trying to figure out if the trapezoid-shaped piece is bigger than the triangular slice. ;-)

when I worked on a commercial swine farm I had to use fractions when measuring and mixing feed in a 1/2 ton drum.. and if your working with breeding animals the punnett's square comes in handy for recessive and dominant characteristics..

Don't laugh, lawyers use fractions alot. Think about it, an attorney takes 1/3 of the recovery. How are you gonna now how much that is if you can't do fractions. Plus, you have to figure out how to apportion liability between various defendants. If you do crafts and you want to change a pattern, you have to be able to do fractions. As the TV show numbers says "We use numbers everyday."

funny you should ask that, I felt the same way in high school, where the heck am I gonna need factions?? lol lo and behold I own a window screens manufacturing company and if a screen is 1/8 too big we have to cut it down from 35 and 5/8 to 35 and 1/2 so thus fractions are actually needed lol

I think a lot of jobs require fractions. When I worked as a tutor, I needed fractions. When in calculating out doses at an animal hospital with complex decimals, I'd often convert them to fractions to make things easier. Fractions have a lot of uses. When you're somewhere stuck without a calculator, they are easier to work with than decimals.

I would think any kind of seamstress might use fractions often. Personally as a stay-at-home mom the only time I use fractions is when I'm trying to divide the last cookie into as many peices as possible LOL

probably u use too much of decimal points that u tend to forget that they are fractions bcoz 3.75 is 3 3/4....so its not that we dont use fractions but that we fail to realize it....

This is a very good point. I was just thinking that being a chef might require using fractions to determine how much of a particular item needs to be in their creation.

Culinary Field is probably the largest field to use fractions on a regular basis Though engineers and architects are up there) . From simple following recipes (add a half cup) to deciding how to increase a recipe for more people. Almost everything you do including ordering products will involve fractions and decimals. But there are day to day things that we all will use, fractions come into play without knowing it a) How much gas do you have 1/2 tank 1/4 tank b) How much milk am I buying a gallon or a half gallon c) Do you drink , what is a fifth of rum or a quart bottle, College did you get a keg or a half keg) In las vegas you legally are not allowed to have less than 1/4 keg delivered. d) Let's get as basic as time , ask someone the time and they tell you a quarter to three (instead of 2:45) Hopefully this helps you answer your students

We are using fractions in all our daily activities.so there is no need that you will be using them in any occupation.i will give some examples for that. even seeing the watch and reading the time is also fraction.(minutes and hours) In preparation of food.(salt, water etc). so for occupation like bank personnel, grocers, mechanics, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, sales persons, electricians, etc. you need to study fractions.

I not only had that question enter my mind but for many subjects we have had to study and stress over:) Why we have to learn so many silly things like that I don't know..

We use fractions when we stitch our clothes also. You deal with fractions everywhere around you. And most of the things that are taught in school and the lower grades are the fundamentals of various subjects which we normally encounter in our day to day activities.

every time you cook or use money. Recipes ask ro a quarter cup of this and 1 1/3 cup of that. and money is all in a fraction of 1 penny, nickle, dime, quarter all are parts of the dollar
