Are We Made Of Our Memories?

I was re-watching the latest episode of House last night, and it made me wonder. Are our personalities and who we are determined by our experiences? If I were to forget all of my life, have my childhood and memories completely wiped away, would I be the same person I am today? Would I make the same choices, use the same logic to make decisions, have the same interests? Or would everything be different? It's really sort of scary thought. How much of who we are is ingrained in the patterns of our brain and blood, and how much is our experiences?

I think most of what you gain from your experiences comes into play in dealing with other people. So while your basic interests and thought processes would probably similar, you might react very differently to people that before. So many of our social skills have to be learned, and I think that's where it would make the biggest difference. As for making decisions, I think you could make very different decisions if you didn't have the memories of your childhood. Things that you learned to fear in childhood could hold no threat for you now, while things you were used to and comfortable with could seem confusing without that context. When I think of all of the things I have learned through experience in my life (some of them very bad experiences, I'll admit), it's hard to imagine what type of person I'd be without that. I'd likely be more trusting, but I might also be less likely to help others in need.

I think it's 50-50. Some of you will forever be lost if certain memories are lost. But as long as you remain alive, you are able to make new experiences and memories. Some interests would change and some would probably remain. There'd probably be new aspects, or I should say, aspects of your personality that aren't new but hadn't been brought to the forefront before that now would be. But the core you is still there, because it was there even before you'd had your first memory.

But what is that core? Without experiences, without memories, what's left? Just a blank slate. They say all children are tabula rosa - clean slates. So what really is the core of a person?

Isn't it we are like computers? Erased all memories to store new memories and experiences. Could that make up a better person because new and fresh memories were stored with your new personality? I can't remember most of my childhood memories. As I grow older I am forgetting almost everything about it except those that create impact.

Yes, we are made of our memories. You may not remember anything, but you subconscious mind will always remember. 20% genetic, 30% from childhood and 50% from experiences

Perhaps! However we have what we call inherent traits, aside from the influences that we gained while growing up like experiences and environmental influences, that accumulates in our memories. Take for example, The case of cultural differences, If you grew in united states and I grew here in the Philippines we have different influences, you speak English, I speak Tagalog, although we both can learn the language it will be different, even the way you think and live. If we take it the other way around and I grew up in states and you grew up here in the Philippines, The difference will be the other way around also. The personalities will differ only in that aspect, however the person inside you, like if you are kind hearted inside, that wont change, the same as physically if you are handsome, whether you grow in Asia or America, won't change. There is nothing to be scared about. I hope you got some insights from here that would change the way you think about what's bothering you. The battle is in the mind. Take care of what you believe in, That will make the change in your personality. Take care and God Bless.

You've made some very interesting points, thank you for your response! The cultural aspect is definitely big. So... what if I, as an American, born and raised here, were to suddenly have all my memories wiped clean and I was re-taught everything in the Philippines? I'd be a completely different person, because all of my outside influences would be completely different. It's really something to think about!

Well, they do say that people who suffer from amnesia do have very different personalities after they lose their memories, their moods and ways of thinking are different, they will like and dislike different foods than before, and they even walk and hold their bodies in different ways than they did before. There are probably some inborne human things that wouldn't change, but I think, yes, you would probably think and act in a completely different way than you did before.

If we then That means I am nothing. I lost my memories a long time ago. I do not think you are made up of you memories. Some times more the naught I wish I could remember my childhood and and other stuff like that, but I think it has made me into a better more caring person, plus there was a reason why I do not remember, you see I did not have a good childhood (even thought I want to remember it) I think my brain just shut it out. So some time I think maybe it is for the better that I do not have any memories.

It doesn't mean you're nothing, just that you're not the same as before. You've made new memories and had new experiences, after all. And those have shaped you.

I think the actual person would stay but the effects of things that would influence our behavior would be taken away. If you've had a tough life you might benefit from this as you could loose your paranoia etc and be a happier person, I hope that made some sort of sense, I know what I mean just not how to explainclearly.

somehow, the environment has a great impact on our personality, as for the experiences we went through; they effect on our actions later on, it's somehow related to the line "one learns from his/her mistakes" . concerning the personality, I think there is something inborn, for example: 2 sisters growing up in the same home by the same parents but 2 totally different personalities, one has some qualities like her dad and the other like her mum. So, it's 25% genetic, 25% experience, 25% environment, 25% inborn.

I tend to think that we are made of our memories. As you grow up and mature you change from your experiences. Experiences are married to memory. However, I don't think that personal taste is made of memory. That is something completely different.

Yeah this thought is a little scary and I think our personality will change if we lose all our past memories.

yes, these are some serious issues. If we loose our memory, we are done with, totally! What would occupy the empty space in our mind? And how can we be ourselves if we don't even know who we are? Interesting!

our life is made of memories.good and bad ones.the ones we want to cherish will never stay and the memories we want to keep will fade away from us.memories play a very confusing role in our lives.i would say our lives are made up of memories.

I think that the things that make us intrinsically "us" lie in our subconcious mind anyway so the things that are you would remain since they are not a part of memory but instinct like breathing. You're memories do not completely what makes you you. Your spirit isn't either so what I guess I am trying to say is you would be stripped of superficialities but not your basic person.

Memories always have affect on what we do. So in a way my answer is yes we are made of memories. One can control their influence with will power.

Yeah. I think we are made up of our memories. Memories are the books of our choices, wisdom, good and fond happenings, our efforts, our battles, our victories and losses. We always keep them close to us and our ways are broaden and stretching ahead by our fond memories. It contains all said by our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and grandparents. All good and bad things that taught us so much are the ones on which we walk ahead in life.

I think alot of who we are is based on our experiences, not that I agree that one who is abused, will become an abuser, but that one who is abused will be affected by it, how they are affected by it, depends on the person. If your whole life is filled with hurt and pain it will affect how you view the world. Unless of course you find hope through someone else.

Who we are is 100% controlled by our society and family background. If i was born in another part of the world, i wouldn't have the same interests or personality i have now.

first off, i'd like to mention that i absolutely love watching house, md. on your question, it's easy to imagine how our past has defined us a person. ultimately, we are changed each day by the experience we perceive, or fail to perceive for that matter. have you watched eternal sunshine of the spotless mind? it also deals with memory and erasure of some details in our memory. that movie made me think :)
