Ever feel like poeple are trying to kill you?

I've become so paranoid because of my food allergies that I sometimes find myself thinking people have it in for me.
For example: My husband and I were eating in a restaurant. I ordered a steak. Nowhere on the menu did it mention mushrooms or mushroom sauce or anything. I got the steak, and it looked okay. I cut off a bit, picked it up with my fork... and my husband yelped and knocked the fork out of my hand. He moved my steak aside, and sure enough, the whole underside of the steak was lined with mushrooms. I had a huge chunk behind the steak that was on my fork. If I'd eaten it, it would have been straight to the emergency room with me!
Anyone else have these experiences?

Yes I have had that problem as well although mine wasn't mushrooms it was liver patte. It didn't state it was on the steak and I'm allergic to all livers. Thankfully I realized and didn't eat it but it could have been a real problem since my throat closes up.
I've had the feeling though of people being after me with medications. I'm allergic to sulfa and iodine and so many doctors and pharmacists figure if it's sulfate, sulfide or a trace element that I shouldn't have a problem with it. I was in the hospital once argueing with the nurse, respitory tech, and the pharmacist on being allergic to Albuetrol Sulfate even while I had a majore reaction to it. They finally got me some medication to take care of the reaction and they got my meds switched but sheesh they were pig headed. Believe me I was wondering then what I did to tick someone off to have them argue with me on what my body was doing.

Well I don't know of any other foods but I do know there are many in soaps, shampoos, laundry soap, even bubble bath. There are also many, many medications with some sort of sulpha form in it. You are best to double and trible check everything.

I never had this experience cause I don't have any food allergy but i think some steaks do serve mushrooms without clear information on the menu. Did you talk to the manager about this? It's probably best that you raise the issue to the manager or whoever's in charge of the restaurant for them to do something.

I did mention it to the manager of this specific restaurant, and he said he'd take care of it. The next time I came in, it mentioned on the menu item for that specific steak that is was served with mushrooms.
Now, whenever I order at restaurants, I make sure to ask about mushrooms if what I'm ordering is anything that it would make any sense whatsoever to use mushrooms in. I'm pretty careful about it these days.

I know what you mean. I'm allergic to corn protien and can't even take meds that contain starch, food starch or corn starch. Unless it specifically says the kind of starch I won't eat some things. And check you labels, for these things as well as corn flour or corn oil!
I also have a friend that can't have any of the nightshade foods - tomatos, potatos, peppers or eggplant. She's also having trouble with the ragweed foods - melons. I spent 3 years advoiding tomatos, its darn near impossible. I can't even suggest she go to my allergist since he's retired!

This is nuts.. you think they would of listed what the steak came with. Unless maybe you didn't read that little part that lists the other items on the plate. I am glad your husband was paying attention. I felt so afraid for you when I read this. Be careful when your out and about! Do you have more food allergies that are as dangerous as muchrooms?

I always read that little part, I've very careful. I did read it, and it wasn't on there. Though after this incident I told them and next time I came in mushrooms was listed under this dish!
That's the only one I have that is dangerous. I do have other foods that I can't eat (they make me vomit) but none that make my throat close up like that.

I always ask if things have mushrooms in them, and some things that are likely to I tend to avoid altogether just because one can't be too careful! =)
And I don't eat at potlucks at all, unless I know exactly who made something and can ask. People put cream of mushroom soup in just about everything!
Thanks so much for your concern!

Sounds so scary! You might want to make sure when at a resturant that muchrooms are not puree'd into any sauces you might be having. That would only proably be in a fancy resturant but still keep it in mind. You stay safe okay!

Wow, that's just crazy. I have noticed more and more labeling mostly on packaged food that you buy in stores about what foods are used in making it for people like yourself with food allergies. It's very rare that I see it on menu's in resteraunts though, and that should probably be changed. Maybe you should consider writing your congressmen about this issue, this is one of those kinds of issues that politicians often like to get involved with. For myself personally, I have a lot of allergies, but thankfully none of them are food related.

I have noticed that more and more packaging is getting allergy warnings, but apparently mushrooms isn't a concern for enough people that it gets added. And the restaurant thing is a huge concern. I'll have to start cranking out those letters! Thanks for the suggestion.
I have a lot of allergies too, when I went for my allergy test last year, the people doing the test were amazed, because I think there was only one thing they tested I didn't have a reaction to. I'm using sublingual immuno-therapy right now, and it seems to be helping a lot, but it doesn't do anything for the food allergy issue.

I am so sorry for people with food allergies or any allergies. I am exceptionally healthy so I cannot fully appreciate what you go through.
How fortunate that your husband was not only with you, but noticed the problem and acted quickly. We are all thankful for that. Your experience, and that of others who have responded, gives me a better appreciation of how some people must be so careful. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Yes, it is me. I am the one who is out to get you. Don't know why. I am making this up as I go along. LOL I am the one who hid those mushrooms underneath the steak. Drats!!! Foiled again. You have a watchful hubby who takes of you and spoils my mean & rotten plans of evil. Make that hubby go away so I can have another chance to get you. LOL I suppose I will have to slunk off into this dark alley --------------- over here....to plan my next dastardly deed. Ah Ha!!!! I will slip some avacado into the meat loaf and do away with MY hubby. Shhhhh!!! Don't tell anyone. LMAO
Seriously, my hubby is deathly allergic to avacadoes. I love them but he can not have them at all. At one mexican restaurant, he told them NO GUACAMOLE!!!! and they served his burrito with extra guacamole. We sent it back to the chef.

I personally don't have any food allergies so I don't have an experience like that. I am however allergic to cats, and this one friend I had wouldn't put her cat away when she would invite me over. I asked her one time are you trying to kill me. She just laughed. Hmmmm come to think of it, she never did answer me. I eventually stopped going over there because my allergies got so bad. I don't know if that really answers your question or not but that's a similar experience I guess lol. LOVE the new avatar lecanis =)

*nods* It is really frustrating when people aren't willing to do anything to help you, even when they claim to be your friends. I think a lot of people just don't understand the severity of allergies!
Thanks! I was so excited when I found out how to make that new avatar! I have so many shots of Hanajima, and I love using her as my avatar... so I was excited to get to use more of them. Someday I might get ambitious and add a couple more, but I'm really happy with it for right now. =)

I feel sorry for you Lecanis, I dont know how I could live with a food allergy, I love just about every kind of food there is and especially mushrooms and onions. My favorite chinese dish is packed full of them too. Lately milk has had a most undesirable effect on me though. I am beggining to wonder if I havent developed a allergy to it. Of course I grew up on milk and used to drink tons of it and it never bothered me before and who knows it could be that they now have something in it that it didnt use to.

I once stayed on a hotel for two days and the hotel staff was notified my allergies. But for my surprise every meal was somehow made with honey and they even put almonds in my cutlet. My partner was so mad and got the kitchen staff fired.

Wow, that's pretty scary when you even give instructions and they still mess it up! How terrifying! I would almost say there should be laws to protect people from that kind of negligence, when you think about it.
I'm glad to hear that the staff got what they deserved in this case!

im not actually cautious about the food i eat, i have allergies with seafoods but i dont mind eating them. my friends keep on telling me not to eat it because they are afraid that the reaction might happen on my way home but i told them that i should make myself used to the foods im allergic with. i dont even care if they tell me that the food has poison.
i have an uncle who visited us in our country. during meals, he wont touch his food unless my aunt will eat something from his plate. he's just paranoid about it. and i dont know why. my mom told me maybe thats because he came from a communist country and thinks that everybody is trying to kill him through food intake.
