Airline bans pets in cabins. How do you feel about this?

If an airline told you that your pet was not allowed in the airline cabins or even on the plane, how would you feel or react? Do you think it is wrong for not allowing pets to to be in the cabins with their owners or on the plane? I was reading in our local paper here that Air Canada has banned nearly all animals from the cabins due the animals causing allergy attacks among people. They claim that the cabins would be allergy free without the pets in the cabins. Do you agree with this statement?

I can agree with not allowing pets in the cabin. Cats meow, dogs bark and it's bad enough having a screaming kid. My husband was on a short flight and this lady didn't have a carrier for her pet and they let her bring it into the cabin for the flight and right after take off it pooped on the floor. The cabin stunk the whole way. Thank goodness it was a short flight. That is another good reason not to allow pets in the cabin.

Very good point there with pets making a mess in the cabin and making it smell even worse than it may have already been.

I think that there should be a way to take your pet with you when you are flying some where. I do not however think the pets should be in the cabin. You can not smoke on a plane because of health reasons. I can understand that pets also cause problem because of health issues. I however, also think that the man or woman sitting next to me who bathed in perfume instead of taking a bath should not be alowed on the plane either. I have terrible allergies and even too much perfume makes me sick. I do think that there should be a way made to accommidate out pets though. Even if they are in a cargo hold.

I think that is mean of them to do that. I do not think that could happen if they are put in a cabin and not let people that are allergic near by. I think it could work for all.

yup. i think so, too. but ofcourse, pets should undergo first with all the medical checkups to ensure the safety of other passengers, too.

I never had to worry about this before because I didn't have any pets besides hamsters until a year ago. But if my KC could not come on the airline or in the cabin with me, I would not want to fly. KC is scared enough already by everything! I walk through the house with the laundry basket in my hands and she bolts the opposite direction! I try to vacuum the stairs, she is hiding for the next hour! I can't imagine if she would be put on a plane and not be allowed to be with me how she would react. I can understand why the airlines would not want pets in the cabin for a allergy free zone. But at the same time, I would not want to traumatize my pets.

that is a good point as well as some pets would not want to be away from their owners on the plane. I would prefer driving with my pet so they could be close to me if the airline would not let me take my pet, if I had one.

Here's the major problem with that: Only small pets that can fit in a bag under the seat are allowed on the aircraft. Sure, service animals are allowed, and every once in a while you'd see a German Shephard seeing-eye dog, but you can't take a pet any larger than a shih-tzu on board anyways. Is it fair that those pet owners aren't allowed to keep their pets in the cabin? Of course it is, so why is it a problem if they stop allowing smaller animals as well? I used to be an airline pilot, and we would see animals in the cargo all the time. One morning we even heard a rooster crowing. Pets went back there all the time, and often they were frightened. I used to take the time to talk to them, just to calm them down a bit, but DON'T EVER OPEN A CAGE ON AN AIRPORT RAMP!!!! I can't stress this enough. Animals are frightened with all of the loud noises, and will run. If the animal gets out and isn't caught right away, they will shoot it. Why? The danger of this animal wandering on a runway in front of a departing aircraft is too great, and could cause a serious accident if an aircraft hits it. Unfortunately, most of the animal deaths happen because the cargo compartment is too hot while the aircraft is on the ground. This only happens in the summer, and most airlines will enforce an animal embargo. In fact, in the aircraft I used to fly we'd get cargo fire warnings all the time because of the heat. Of course there was no fire, but would you feel comfortable having your pet in a room so hot the fire alarm goes off? But I don't want to scare you away from it. Airlines have become very cogniscent of animals and make a point of keeping them out of the cargo bin and in the shade until the aircraft has powered up and air conditioning is running sufficiently. I always made a point of finding the owner of the animal, and personally walk back to tell them their pet is safely on board the airplane and doing well. Perhaps its time for airlines to start doing this for everyone. I know I would pay quite a bit extra for this service.

Well, airlines are allowed to make rules like that, but I think the logic behind this descision is a bit flawed. First of all, banning pets only gets rid of animal dander, it won't eliminate mold, pollen, dust or other more common allergens, so the cabins will not be allergy free. Also, when an allergic person goes into a pet owners home, the main reason they have a reaction is because the dander has built up in the house, rugs and furniture, if the pet in the airplane is kept in it's carrier, very little of the dander would escape into the surrounding air. I've traveled on plane where other people had pets with them and can't say I heard anyone complain about them. I certainly found them far less irritating than a crying child or someone wearing too much perfume. As for the odor of the animals, the air is "scrubbed" as it is recycled, so a reasonably clean animal wouldn't be noticed (after all, if the air wasn't scrubbed, the smell of that many people crammed together would be far mor unbearable then a single dog or a cat) I assume if the pet had an "accident" the owner would take the carrier to lav. to clean it up, so the smell would not linger in the cabin for long.

Well as far as I am aware, pets have always been banned on Australian airlines. Only seeing eye dogs are allowed on board. If you want to bring a pet, you have to organize ahead for it to be stowed in the hold. I don't have a problem with this, as some people do have allergies, not to mention pets can be noisy etc. I love pet's, but bar any international flight, if the pet is in the hold, its not going to be there for that long, so its not that bad.

The airlines started this nonsense when they banned peanuts because some people may be allergic to them. So, now everyone has to suffer and eat stale potatochips. The times I fly I take the dog in a carrier with me. I don't put him in the cargo hold anymore because once he was left on the end of a runway with a cat. The cargo people forgot about them and we waited for over 30 min until they tracked him down.

i am aware that most airlines won't accept pets to be transfered and checked in through the planes. and that we need certifications proving that our pets are pest free and safe from all sort of diseases. i guess they have reasons for this. but i'd surely be sad if one day, i wanna bring a pet with me and even if i am complete with papers, my pet won't be allowed to travel.

As a pet lover and owner it would kill me not to be able to bring my pet but as a person who can have severe allergies I wouldn't want to put myself in jeopardy either! I have to say, I do somewhat agree that the animal can come on the plane as cargo but to have them in the cabin can truly cause some allergy problems I'm sure. There are people who are severely allergic and to be honest, if you're not traveling with your pet it's probably not even on your mind that there could be a pet on the plane until you're already there.

Well, airlines are private companies so they can decide whatever rules they like. I agree that allergic passengers shouldn't have to deal with animals anyways. I think its rude for pet owners to assume their pets rights override those of other people in public. I get mad when people bring dogs or cats into stores or restuarants because it is completely rude and inappropriate.

The only time they should have pets in a store, is if they are blind and have a guidance dog. The airlines do have the right to make this rule if they want to, just like companies have rules the employees follow at work. If I had a pet and wanted it to go along with me, I think it would be better to drive.

Well, I agree that pets shouldn't be allowed on the plane because of people's allergies. Personally, I don't mind because I like pets and animals. I hate being around smoking, though, so I can understand how someone could hate being around pets. Therefore, I think that since there is no smoking on a plane then it makes sense that there would be no pets on a plane. It's just to make people happy and not have too many complaints.

I agree that it would make people with allergies happier as they would not have to worry about sneezing or having itchy or watery eyes. I probably would not take my pet with me and would leave my pet with a neighbor or someone that I trust to look after my pet while I was away.

I agree. I had to fly my dog over to Scotland and he wasn't allowed on the same plane. He had to fly cargo. As much as I hated that idea, it was probably for the best. While I was living in Georgia, I tried to fly with my brother's cat. He was in his cat carrier box and he was sedated. As we were boarding the plane, the cat woke up. He was making all sorts of a racket. He drove everyone nuts. So, I can see why they don't want pets in the cabin. It is best for the health of everyone involved.

Personally I wouldn't want to be in a cabin with someone's pet. I'm very sensitive to smells and in an enclosed space with only recycled air the smell would be unbearable in no time.

That is a very good point having to deal with all the smells passing through the air. I have not seen anyone bring a pet on a airline as of yet so it has not been a concern yet.

I think its not so harsh action to not to allow pets on plane since pets are not so cool & calm in any situation. Any mishap taking place could evn endanger so many passengers life... Even there may be some allergy causing to those who have problem with it... & just imagine, if every passenger having a pet each... So i think , its perfectly fine to not to allow pets in plane...

Having seen how some people allow their pets to behave in the street, e.g allowing their dogs to jump up at perfect strangers, then no I am not bothered by this. I think people with pets should be able to take their pets if they are transported safely in the hold but they should not be in the cabin unless they are guide dogs and properly trained. I don't mean to sound harsh but just how I feel.

Hi WOW! What a difference in your country We have NEVER allowed pets on board!! If you want your pet with you on holiday, it has to go SIX MONTHS ahead of you because of the quarantine rules we have here, and then it has to come back to you SIX MONTHS later. Even in our domestic flights, I dont think it is allowed

A lot of airlines don't allow pets. If you need to fly with a pet, you just have to find an airline that does. Many airlines are also eliminating peanuts as not to cause allergies.

I agree 100%. Your right to travel with your pet should not outweigh my right to not have to put up with an allergan on the plane.

Ofcourse I would feel quite bad if there is a pet in my hand and it is rejected to travel with me. Yes ofcourse it is wrong because the biggest devil in this world are human beings itself then what will a small pet do?

Accutaly its good that pets are not allowed, because pets are not so eco-friendly, even the disposal of such pets are not done properly... more over things dont remain good for much time in plastics... SO i think ban on pets are not so adverse since there is alwyz a alternative whch will be well suited for other things too...
