How do I upload a photo beside my name? Help please.

Hi. I just tried to upload a photo here on mylot that is to go next to my name but it didn't work. I pressed on upload photo and chose to add it to avatar but nothing is there for me. Did I do something wrong or am I not doing something right? I looked here on mylot for some help but do not see what I need to know to do to add a photo here. Any help here is greatly appreciated.
