I think you are confusing the term stitch with stitch pattern. There are only two stitches in knitting. The knit stitch and the purl stitch. Every stitch pattern you see is just a different combination of those two stitches. Once you know how to knit and how to purl you can do anything. I'd suggest the site knittinghelp.com They have videos for free and its a great site.

Thank you for your help...i still have to learn how to purl....i was just reading some stuff on it...i think i may try it with my next project....i guess what i wanted to try and learn is how ppl make like swirls or strips or the raised patterns on some clothing or blankets made from knitting that i see.....if anyone could tell me a lil more about that...that would be great! thank you again, Nicole~

That is simply combining the knit and purl stitch in a pattern to make a design.

One site that has always helped me is knittinghelp.com. There are actual video clips of different knitting techniques. I seem to learn better when I can see someone demonstrating something. I hope this helps a bit - good luck!

It's kind of hard to teach without pictures. Have you looked around to see if there are any knitting clubs where you live now? Maybe you could find someone to show you. There's a good forum at Knittinghelp http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/forum/ You can ask questions there and maybe even find someone near you. I'm thinking you know the knit stitch and need to learn the purl stitch. Those are the only two stitches you really need to know. Good luck!

hi i'm like just started knitting again. I've forgotten most of the stitches. But i've found a really good site on here called knitting pattern central and they even have little videos of some of the stitches. They have loads of beginners ones. I've practised some of them just on squares to get used to different ones. Good Luck

I am also a more visual learner and have a hard time learning knitting things from books alone, so I understand where you are coming from. Do you have any knitting or yarn stores near you? Often the people who work there give lessons or are willing to help you through a tough spot in a pattern. I think that even large craft stores like Michael's or AC Moore give knitting lessons now. They can probably help you learn the basics and once you are more comfortable with those it will be easier experiment with some more advanced things. If you are interested in buying a book there is an actual "Knitting for Dummies" book that is very good. I learned to knit in college and we all used that book to help us learn. Debbie Stroller's Sn'B (Stitch and B*tch) books are also really good and have some funky and fun patterns. Good luck!

go to the HGTV website and look under Vickie Howell program. You will find projects for beginner there, including the patterns. I have watched a few shows and they really make cute and easy stuff. Try it.

Go to knittinghelp.com It's a very easy to understand and helpful site. They even have free learning videos. By the way, a purl is just basically a backward knit. It's frustrating at first, but after a few tries it's just as easy as a knit if you stick with it.

the only kind of stitches i know how to do are knit and pearl when i learned to knit i was never taught to read a pattern so i have always had to make up things off the top of my head it works for me now but i would eventually like to learn to read a pattern i also tried to learn more stuff online but i could not understand it either i think the best way to learn is to be taught from another person good luck trying to learn
