Are you worried about your pension fund?

I was looking at a program this evening where it was reported that many people's pension funds had just 'disappeared'. And than the reporter went to a company and informed them that if they were to join the company's pension plan that they could expect to only receive just over £3,000 a year once they'd retired! This was in the UK where Gordon Brown's tax on pension funds has caused a dire situation for lots of people.

That is still a lot of money to some people $250.00 a month on top of their Social Security. I know that there are many people who have only their Social Security to survive on. Not every company has a Pension Plan. So people have to try and save a little bit each money of their own money.

Unfortunately with oil and electricity charges as high as they are it doesn't leave a lot.

I have many friends whose pension funds were TOTALLY invested in Enron stock. When Enron went belly up, they all lost their pension funds. Many were already in their 50's when this happened and had to then start saving for their retirement. I'm glad that my husband's pension plan was NOT invested in Enron or totally in any one stock. I do not have a company-sponsored pension plan, but I do have a Roth IRA (individual retirement account) and put money into it each month. I've worked for a financial planner for 6 years now, and his knowledge has been a big help in retirement planning for us. There's no way that most people can live on Social Security alone when they retire. I'm still trying to get my son and daughter (in their 40's now) to start an IRA while they're fairly young, or they'll regret it when they get older. Of course, they have kids and many expenses that we no longer have, and they haven't put my suggestion on the front burner yet.

I'm going to start saving as soon as I start working, I'm going to put it into the highest savings ROI account that I can find!...With house prices and mortages being so high it will be hard but there's no choice but to get on with it.

You have the right idea. After all, the more you can save for retirement now, the earlier you might be able to retire. Thanks for the best response.

well i know that if the cost of living gets too high in Ireland I would be able to live comfortably in other European countries.

Gee, I thought it was only in the U.S. that these kind of shenanigans were going on. Isn't Brown in line to be the next PM in Britain, or am I confusing him with someone else... I've been saving on my own in addition to my company's savings, most of which I already have possession of in accounts until I retire. I should be OK unless the world economy collapses, in which case having money wouldn't matter anyway; we'll all be foraging for nuts and berries in city parks!

lol!..back to the hunter/gatherer days..:)..and yes, Brown is being touted as the next PM. He won't admit it's his fault that many people are now in serious trouble as far as their pensions are concerned, even though it's his policy's fault!

Pensions are something that should be of interest to all working people. I'm lucky, I'm over the retiring age but have a very good job in a foreign country that I love, so I won't retire just yet. However I know I have a guaranteed income when I return to Australia. I'm so concerned about this, I started a similar discussion as this recently.

I'm happy you're financial situation is sorted..:)..I feel so sorry for others. On the program I was watching there was a man who's pension had disappeared, and he now has to do a paper round in order to subsidise his income.

Yes, Im worried about social security and every thing we are gonna need when we all retire. The government doesnt seem to take the working man that works so hard all of his life seriously. why should we have to worry when we retire? We have enough worried getting through life just to retire. We should not have to worry about how we are gonna survive after retirement. My husband and I discuss this alot because he can retire in 12 years at 62 but can we make it and will there be any funds for him when he does. It is rediculous how hard you have to work and have to worry the whole time afterwards, how will I survive?

My parents are lucky. My dad is building a few houses and he will sell them once he officially retires. He also works for himself as a civil engineer and I'd say he won't go until he feels he really can't do it anymore.

I am worried with companies taking away 401k from their employees and the United State's own Social Security fund in trouble. That is why early retirement investing is crucial these days. I am also trying to get myself some Residual income. That would be my vehicle to have a more secure retirement.

Well, that is so sad and I really feel bad for those people. I hope something will be done about that, so those poor people won't loose their retire money and all.

I am worried about my pension plan, because I don't have any with any companies, only the provincial governement, and that is not nearly quite enough. I should invest in a REER, but never seem to have enough money to put in every week.

I'll definitely talk to my bank about a high interest savings fund once I start working full time, and hopefully I'll be able to save a bit every week. Apart from that I'm not sure.
