Ya know, I never thought about it, but that's a good theory.
It's possible.

As a Christian the bible talks about fortune telling, soothe sayers, being an abomination to God. I feel It is wrong to consort with Fortune Tellers or desire to know your future. I believe God has a purpose for each and every one of us and his plan is the best. No matter what we face, knowing he has a plan for good through it all is sustaining.
That's funny about the story you shared, because its true. They don't know anything...its a big guess. If they do have spirits telling them futures, those spirits are deceptive and don't know anything either---its a big lie.

No, all this "psychic" stuff is all a scam. I do believe in prophets, but all the other stuff is a game to make money.
