Would you sentence this grandmother to jail time? A 62-year-old grandmother who prosecutors said ran drugs to support her bingo habit has been sentenced to three years in prison and a $150,000 fine. Acting on a tip, state police stopped Leticia Villareal Garcia near Bisbee in southeast Arizona in February 2005 and found 214 pounds of marijuana stuffed into the trunk of her car. Garcia has maintained her innocence, telling the judge at her sentencing Friday that she was unaware of the grass as she headed for a bingo game."I never, never had any knowledge of that car being loaded when I went to Tucson," the Bisbee resident told Cochise County Superior Court Judge Wallace Hoggatt. Garcia testified at her trial in November that her son's godfather had borrowed her car the day before. Her lawyer, Robert Zohlmann, said she had been used as a "blind mule" to unknowingly haul drugs. Garcia said she often played bingo, occasionally winning several thousand dollars at a sitting, although her only regular income was a $275 monthly welfare check she received for caring for a granddaughter."The underlying issue is that she's got a bingo problem, which explains why an otherwise nice person might get sucked into something like this," prosecutor Doarcia faced as much as 12 1/2 years in prison, but Johnstun asked for just four years, agreeing with her lawyer that her age and lack of a record called for the lesser sentence.

i think they should first check and investigate the whole matter whether she has won that money and about that person who borrowed the car, she might be saying the truth and it wont be justice to send an innocent person to jail.

If she has committed something against the law then she deserves to be punished in some way that is humane and just. It's not the jail, I think, as she has not committed any heinous crime.

Oh dear! well a Grandma was charged in the UK for pushing grass from her potting shed. If you do the crime you should do the time. Sorry but if she is doing this any way, and using it to support her bingo habit, sadly she deserves what ever the current punishment is for trafficking even if it was only marihauna or hash or cannabis or grass.

yes, coz i believed that we should be responsible to every acts we commit whether is good or bad and the ages i believed is not a good excused for any person not to be liable to his or her own action. anyway, it depend still on the judge's decision if he would be gracious enough to consider her age and make some compromises in regard to the person status, condition or age.

If it was her's then yes she should do time in prison it don't matter how old she is on the other hand it might not be her's that is the worst of it maybe she should not borrow out her car. Who know's these days what people know matter what there age will do for money. Yes I feel very bad for the granddaughter she is the one that will have to pay the price for this act.

Holy Cow you have GOT To be kidding! I wonder if she really IS innocent? That's a lot of weed to have in the trunk of your car. I think it would be hard NOT to notice that much weight in the trunk. It would be like hauling an overweight person in the back of your car!! HOLY COW!! I don't know if I'd give her that much jail time, but there should be some kind of hefty fine and community service to break that bingo habit. DANG...that's one serious habit!!

well it is not that old not to go to jail, and this grandmother knew what she was doing before she got caught, and with today the grandmother did this as it is not that much money that she is receiving from the welfare at all how is the grandmother supposed to live with only pittance received from her government.

Old people don't have much to do. Don't have salaries (to go to bingo ;) and their pension is just not enough. But I don't think this is common. There just are those kinds of grandmothers/fathers who are wild/stupid/crazy enough to do certain things like this. They think, in my opinion, that if they get cought, they could slip easily into the role of a "sweet ol' lady". But... NOT! :D

First of all someone is not going to borrow a car and then leave the stash in there. But she did break the law so she has to pay. As hard as it might be because of her age. Maybe if this is her first offense then she should get probation.

Feel sorry for her and who thinks to look in trunk of car after someone borowed it? I hope she gets probation for the 4 years . who will take care of the kid. No one must not be able to take care of the child but her since she is the one to have her now
