I have one and its ding dong fills our house every hour =D. I think eventhough they're replaced by more modern, compact and practical clock, they remain valuable stuff for people. The rarest stuff is usually the most valued ones.
As for myself I have to admit, I sometimes get scared with the loud ding dong, especially during quiet night times. Can I ask why you're interested in this topic?

There was a time when grandfathers clock are supposed to be a permanent fixture in each living room. At least, where I come from, this is always the case. You're right in your observation. They are disappearing and becoming more and more a collector's item. I saw a store though that sells grandfathers clock, but they are a lot smaller and not mechanically driven, they changed the inside to digital and are battery run, which personally I think is a fake.

Wow - this one took me back with a BANG. Yes, where have they all gone. I'm glad to see a lot of the people responding here have some.
My grandparents had this BIG old one in the formal room and lots of smaller ones through the house. Some had birds on, another antelope, some flowers and I remember one with a boy and girl. When the barometer goes down - the girl comes out with an umbrella and when the sun shone - the boy was out.
On the hour the house was filled with all the different gongs.
I wonder what happened to them all?? None of my relatives have any now.

Lack of interest, lack of skill to build quality clocks and maintain them. The great "digital age. Decorating fashion. I think there are many reasons. I know collectors who want antique grandfather clocks, but I do not know of a market for new ones.

i was brought up in a house that had both grandfather and grandmother clocks, they are lovely. Until last saturday night i had not seen one for years but I was invited to a co workers house and he had a beautiful Georgian Grandfather clock. You can still find them, often in second hand stores or reconditioned ones for sale privately. I have seen an ocassional one in anteak shops but their rarety leads to a huge price tag way above my pocket level
blessed be

I think Grandfather clocks are beautiful - and so much work and craftsmanship has gone into them. We do still see them quite a lot here in England - especialy in old "Stately Homes" and also in Hotels and pubs because they add to that "olde worlde" feeling that we think tourists like when they come to England. A lot of older people still have them in their homes too.
