What do YOU do when your car won't start?

For environmental reasons, my husband and I share a car. He drives me to work, because it's on the way. He's been home sick this week, so i've had the car. Well, the TEMP outside is SOOOO cold this morning the car wouldn't start. What would you do if you couldn't get to work because your car won't start? I live 2 miles from my office - during the summer, I ride my bike, or I could even walk. But it was SOOOO cold this morning, i called the office and asked if someone could come get me, and they did!

We have triple A, we live 10 miles out of town. Hubby and I work differently. So if his does not work then he would take mine and then work for me in the evening. If mine does not start when I need to leave for work then I could call him and he would work for me for that evening. Seems odd, but it sure is nice that this works out this way. He does not mind really! Glad you have a good place to work that they would do this for you. How did you get home later?

Actually, it just happened this morning. So I just got to the office. Hopefully someone will give me a ride home. Actually, I live right on the way home for several co-workers, and when my husband has to work late, I get rides home from other folks. I have REALLY nice co-workers and I am SO thankful!

I probably would have done what you did. Actually, I have had to do that because my car broke down. It is a good thing you work with some nice people!

Don't feel bad, I still got to work. And I'm not moving, we JUST moved here. I love the snow, I go x-country skiing every day with my dogs, and downhill skiing on the weekends. This place is paradise!

Prevent is better than cure. So regular maintenance and service for your car is essential stuff to do. It might cost you some money, but just worth it. Imagine you are in emergency situation and find that your car won't start! :O. So few things to do before it happen: 1) maintain car service regularly (send to workshop yearly or half yearly 2) Keep the car technician or workshop contact handy so that they can come in aid if the car won't start. 3) Keep the radio cab contact handy too. They might help you one day. 4) Keep the relative/friend contact :) I am not good at engine stuff, so i can't really tell what to do with the engine when it won't start. I am living in tropical country, so i am not sure if car in cold weather country will having more problem with engine startup. Hope this help btw and good luck :)

Neither me nor my husband drive a car at the moment. It started out as a temporary measure as we had just moved house, we had always planned to buy a new car once a saving scheme matured but we have gotten really used to not having one and all the hassle such as parking not to mention cost and traffic jams. We also get to feel good about doing something positive for the environment! We use public transport or else walk everywhere, as well as getting the odd lift from people. So to answer your question - our car never starts and we get by ok.

We have a portable electric battery charger that sometimes will solve a problem. One other thing, my dad used to swear by, is an engine block heater. These would not solve the problem of getting to work itself, but might help prevent cold weather days from affecting your ability to get there. As for getting to work, ask a neighbor, relative or friend. Since it is an unusual circumstance, they probably wouldn't mind too much helping you out. I don't know if you live in a large enough city, and I know they can be very expensive, but there are always cabs as a last resort. You could call in, if you have vacation/personal time off available. What you did was great! I would do whatever I had to just to get there, it shows dedication to your job.

Oh you poor thing! We live in Nebraska, so we are used to cold weather and snow. Some of these things just come naturally to us. And having one on the motorcycle is just a really cool thing! As small as their gas tanks and fuel lines are, it would definately be a postive addition to the bike.

My husband originally bought the car in Virginia - long before he ever thought he'd move someplace colder. He did NOT get the cold weather package which would have included a block heater. It's funny though, we bought a small aircraft block heater for his MOTORCYCLE so he could ride it when it was cold (but before the roads were covered in snow) we didn't think to get a heater for the car. :)

I think calling someone is the only thing you really can do. Unless you are good with cars and can get it to work, but if it is too cold and you are not prepared to do something to fix the car the only thing and best thing to do is to call someone or just go in the house and forget it lol.

oh, the very mention of it is a bit scary. if it is in the morning like your situation i would try out the initial check-up that my repairman had suggested . if no result then i would call him and take some oral instructions if possible. still no result, i would just leave it at home and ask him to take care of it or otherwise opt for a public transport system or request a friend of mine to pick me up.

I only live a short distance from work as well. When my car gives me problems, I ride my bike. I even have it set up where I can (and have) used it to go to the grocery. I have actually been riding my bike to work for a couple of weeks cause my starter's going out on my car. I bundle up and pedal on! And yes, it IS cold, but it's better than walking or depending upon someone who may not show up!

Wow. You have some seriously willing co-workers. I guess you're quite lucky you live in a place where everyone has a car. I lived in NY for 19 years. If you couldn't get to work because of your car, you went on bus or train. Otherwise...you stood home. I live in Florida now though (Tampa to be exact) and everyone has a car. I would imagine I might be able to do the same thing you did if my car broke down, but I'd rather call a taxi. I once informed my co-workers that I needed somebody to pick me up the next day and someone volunteered.

Because I am a single mother with only one income, I would catch the bus. Depending on the weather, and yes it has been very cold here where I live too, I would walk or ride my bike. I only ride my bike in the summer or when it is warm enough outside. I think you calling a co-worker to come and get you was a very brave thing and also it shows that you was not going to let the weather or anything else stop you.

I would do the same if it were as cold as you are saying. In the summer I wouldn't mind walking or riding a bike but, in the winter you can get sick from it being soo COLD.

Good for you. Sharing a car would be very stressful to me. It seems to be working great for you. That is great team work. My car didnt want to start yesterday either. I waited a bit and tried again and it finaly did. I guess when it dosent I start making phone calls too. Two miles isnt bad in the summer but in the winter two miles could be devistating.

First I call my husband and then I call CAA. I live in Canada, this is the equivalent of AAA in the states I think. If my car wouldn't start and I had to go to work, I would call in work and say I'd be late and hop on the bus.

well that was nice of someone to come get you and good that you didnt just call in to work - they know where you live right? well i live in vermont and it gets pretty cold here during the winter so when its cold out i try to keep starting my car every couple of hours and let it warm up. when i was a kid and living at home my dad would keep the battery on a battery charger all night and he even used to bring the battery inside so that it could stay warm. good luck and try to stay warm
