Did musicians like The Beatles and Elvis really start rock & roll?

This is often a debate between me and my mom. Personally, I'm not a fan of Elvis, but I can definitely tolerate The Beatles. However, it's been said that musicians such as themselves started rock & roll. I disagree. They played a huge part in it, but I think that music just evolved and rock & roll is where it ended up.

I think Rock & Roll was started by black musicians like B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Fats Domino and Little Richard.

I know what you mean about Elvis - I'm not a fan but I really love the Beatles. I don't feel that either one of them were the beginning of rock 'n roll. But one record that is credited for pushing rock and roll into the mainstream (teen mainstream) was Bill Haley and the Comets hit "Rock Around the Clock". There was also Chuck Berry's song "Maybellene" as well...

No I don't think so but what they did do was to engrain rock and roll so deep into our minds that without them we may not have continued to have rock and roll.
