What do you do to help you sleep?

I have responded to this discussion a few times, but have found myself in this situation often. Right now it is 5:00 a.m. and I have been up since 3:00, when my teething four month old awoke me because he was in pain. I tossed and turned in bed for 2 hours, and decided I was done.. and got up. What do you do when you can't sleep? do you ever just decide you are done trying to go back to sleep?

Yes, I have thought of doing this, but Sleeping pills affect me so much that i don't wake up if the kids need me.. and my hubby would sleep through a tornado. (:

I don't think sleeping pills is really good since it has some side effects to the users.

The same thing happens to me a lot. Most nights I only get between 4-5 hours of sleep. If I wake up at 3am, I might try to go back to sleep for about 10 minutes. After that, I will get up and catch up on some housework. My problem is that I am so busy during the day that I don't have time to think about anything, so when it comes time for bed, I have way too much to think about. I think about bills, what I will teach my kids the next day (I homeschool my 4 children), my business (I teach salsa dancing), the day that we just had, etc. I think what you and I both need to do is try to find some quiet time during the day where we can just sit and think. I know that's easier said then done......Good luck!

YEs, I agree, I need to start setting aside some time to just think. (: I usually find that when I'm awake at night, I can't nod off agian because there is just too much swirling around in my head. (: Thanks for the resposne.

If I do not have any place to go the next day, I just might give up and get up. Otherwise, I will drink a warm cup of chocolate, stretch out in the recliner, with a really soft blanket, turn on the weather channel really low, and let the cat bring me a nap.

Once in a great while I give up and get up. The experts actually say not to stay in bed tossing for more than twenty minutes, as that trains you to be awake in bed. I will get up, have warm or hot chocolate, stretch out in the recliner, put something monotonous, like weather channel on in the next room on tv. I usually drop off them. If it only happens once in a blue moon, I also might just use those as bonus work hours.

Yes I am constantly tossing and turning in bed, for some reason, Ithink if I get up, I won't be going back to sleep, but many times I just lay there for hours. I have gotten better lately, as the youngest is off his schedule and waking up at night time to say hi. (: THanks for the advice.

I just told a friend of mine to get out in the afternoons and get some fresh air. A walk or something. I don't have very many days when I am not outside since we live on a ranch. But the days I that I spend in the house, I do not sleep as well. I also try reading to fall asleep. Or I just get up and get my day going. Have a nap with your baby in the afternoon and never mind the housework. It will still be there when you get up.

Ally, thanks for the good info. I had always heard that being outdoors helps, but had somehow forgotten. I know it helps my kids sleep, I actually took your advice the other day, and we all went for a walk, I didn't sleep, but the boys both slept for almost 3 hours! (: Thanks again.

I read. Reading has always had this effect on me. I mean you have to choose something like the business section of the newspaper nothing exciting. And yes, i often too decide that i'm done trying. I don't get alot of "me" time so i use those hours alone to do me stuff. i paint my nails or pluck stuff like that.

Good idea, I usually will find something to read, but i've never thought about treating it as "me" time, usually if I can't sleep I end up sorting laundry or something. (: I should try relaxing a bit more. THanks.

I usually watch Tv or listening to slow and blues music. It really helps if you just turn off the lights in your bedroom.
