When you feel depression or sadness pulling you down, what are some things that you do that are helpful in lifting your mood? Do they always work for you?

There are times I get depressed because the routine way of doing things wears me off. It just gets tiring sometimes. Life takes a toll on you at one point or another. So what I do to be able to lift my mood is to try something new and harmless. I don't care how small that thing can be for as long as it is something I haven't tried before and that it is something that I can keep doing for a considerable amount of time with minimal stress. It may be as simple as playing out some shapes on a piece of clay, or maybe trying to watch a sunset from the roof of somebody's else's place (with his permission, of course!) You might want to try that. I told myself the next time I get depressed I am going to do a sound trip on Brazilian music or other languages that I haven't been exposed to. If mere listening won't cheer me up, I am going to dance! =P

I'm lucky enough to live way out in the middle of nowhere Northern BC Canada.. there is forest and a beautiful river only 15 minutes from my door. I just strap on my hiking boots and go for a walk. The fresh air and the calmness of nature and the beauty of it all just makes me feel so much better. I'm not sure I'd ever be able to live in a big city where I couldn't get to do this.

I really do envy that. I too like to go walking or for a bike ride, just to get away from it all. I would love to live somewhere with breathtaking scenery because the magnitude of it all tends to put things into perspective.

I know what you mean about the healing quality of nature. I'm lucky to live near a forest too and it's wonderful to be out in it. Even just being out in my backyard can be theraputic.

Since I live in the city and no serene environment is readily available to destress, what I do is to just pamper myself. I do my own foot spa, my own pedicure. I also do my own body scrub by combining virgin coconut oil and sugar. Then I deep condition my hair and afer all these pamepering are done I buy my comfort food cheeseburger and fries and then I drink hot tea after eating this meal. Then I go for a walk and visit the grocery and just browse the items there even if I don't really plan to buy anything.Seeing a lot of people lifts off the feelign of gloominess. By the way light always help when you are feeling sad or depressed as light helps our brain to produce serotonin. Thanks for the link. The body scrub is a great idea, I love those kind of home-spa therapies, they can do wonders.

I sit at the nature preserve near me and meditate, take pics, listen to my ipod, write poetry and relax there.

well the best thing for depression for me is make my self do anything but stay laying on a fire , it is hard to do so but if and when ya do it its the first healthy step to the better day .. i have also a litle bad habbit for a sorrow food and that makes it just worse .. gain weight get deppressed abot it and eating makes it " better " yeah right.. but when i get my self up and go out just for a walk beside eating and swimming in our own despire it works for me , something else to think about .. but not always i have a medication that i have eaten about 2 months .. it makes it easier to enjoy things ..

You're right, sometimes removing yourself from a particular situation and getting out can be helpful. I'm glad to hear that medication has been helpful to you also.

For me the best things are writing, drawing or painting, listening to music, workin out, taking a jacuzzi or being outside (in the warm months)...they USUALLY work but not always. Sometimes the mood just has to ride out/run its course...

That's true about riding it out, sometimes it just needs to let go on its own. Thanks for replying.

I find that doing my writing, painting, playing music is enough to refocus on what really matters. In other words, being myself, doing what I love doing. It never fails. Point being, and not wanting to sound insensitive, that the doom and gloom solve nothing. They're irrelevant. Whatever's causing them has to be dealt with anyway, so why bother? Doing something constructive gets you out of the cycle. Doom and gloom make things worse, so you feel discouraged before you even start. Another good idea is exercise. Physical fitness really does help, and it also gives you some stamina to deal with ongoing things. Whatever it is, don't let it run your life.

Those are very helpful tips and creative things are helpful for me too, but sometimes it's hard to get inspired enough to draw or write. Anyway, I understand what you're saying about trying not to get caught in the cycle of depression although it's not always easy to do. Thanks for replying.

I can lift my mood in a few way, one would be to have a good moan and not let people and stresses get to me. But being around people I love and care about is one of the best ways to make me feel better, because they simply remind me of what is really important in life. A great way to lift you mood is to laugh, get your favourite comedy and go with the flow of it. As you laugh your body will release endorphines which are a natural high.
