So its 6am where I'm at and its -8 out due to windchill and sure enough, isnt the school closed again today....What is up with that?! So its -8 big whoop! thats why touques and scarves are for for crying out loud! I dont ever remember the schools being closed in Ontario for windchill that low...The winter we had -40 yes I believe the schools were closed then (my oldest was just an infant) but I dont remember them closing for even -15 or -20 since my kids have become school age....thats just silly to me! -8 and everything comes to a halt! is it like that were you are from too?

It was like that yesterday and today. It was -3 yesterday and with the windchill it was -28. Today it was -4 and -15 with the windchill. They cancelled school only because the buses wouldn't start. It really had nothing to do with how cold it was. There were at least 10 buses that wouldn't start yesterday and today I'm sure it was the same thing. It really ticks me off because they shortened Easter vacation to make up for one day and they were supposed to have a long weekend--next week and they shortened that. It was supposed to be Friday and Monday off now it is just Monday :(

All they have to do here is see a snowflake and they close schools. It's ridiculous! It's very cold here today too. The windchill factor is below 0 degrees. The schools opened 2 hours late.

my kids friend was here over the weekend and he mentioned somethign about days being tacked on at the end of the yr because of snow/cold days in the winter..thats just ludicris as far as I'm concerned I mean alot of ppl make plans and book cottages/cabins/trips etc this time of yr for the upcoming summer..I know I'm planning on it and if it just so happens my kids wont be here for the new end of school dates should it happen then so be it... I can understand if the buses cant start etc thats one thing but I dont think it was cold enough for that to happen this morning or yesterday morning actually...I just think its nuts I mean I remember going to school and being at school with blizzard like condtions ya know LOL..this is just silly to me..and its not like I'm from way up North in Ontario..Hell I grew up just over the border from where I am now...I live in Western New York for crying out loud its not like they arent USED TO snow and cold here LOL

My school district doesn't close for bad roads. We've had a few days where the roads were terrible and we had white out conditions and my son still went to school. The only reason they canceled the past few days is because the buses wouldn't start, otherwise they'd be at school.

It's funny, when the weather dropped to about high 20's in California, many people felt it was the worst. I actually enjoyed it since I can wear a sweater and some mittens. I know that 20's aren't to impressive but I just wish it would snow over here.

I really didn't want to take my baby out this morning because it was so cold. (I had him looking like that little boy off of "A Christmas Story".) It's about -10 out here with the wind chill. I can't imagine making my child wait on a bus or walk in these weather conditions. I guess that -10 isn't that bad when you're used to -40, but here it's pretty bad when you reach these temps.

I hate this cold wheather I will be glad when it's spring they close over 500 schools in our city. It is just to cold for anything. My car wouldn't even start I had to call AAA. It took them 3 hrs. so I canceled.them. My husband finally came home to jump it off. I hope it started today. this part of the world where we lived it's really cold.

No, we never have "cold days" I live in Mississippi, and though it doesn't get that cold here, 20 degrees is FREEZING to us. But they don't cancel work or school just for cold weather. They cancel for snow that sticks simply because we haven't gotten snow that stuck since 1994, so we don't quite know how to drive in all that!

My goodness that is cold!!!! Here it is currently 14 degrees with a high of 28. So again, we have the heat lol. We have not ever experienced colds as you are from what I can remember. I do know besides icy or extreme snowy roads, schools do not close here, regardless how cold it gets. I think that is a shame since over half of every school, the children ride buses. That is awful to have to stand in temps so cold waiting on a bus.

we live out in the country so unless the bus is running my kids arent goin to school since I dont drive and walking isnt an option (their school is about 10 miles away LOL) but I remember when I was in school if you were a walker you had to show up...only the bused kids didnt have to if the buses werent running etc..which really sucked for me because I was in walking distance to all 3 of my schools LOL

Are temperatures are in the same range as yours right now. Schools here were closed yesterday, but are open today. It really makes no sense, as the temperature is roughly the same as it was yesterday. I suppose the funding the school gets for having the kids in school is more important than the windchill warnings at this point. I just hope that most of the kids that walk to school will be driven by their parents until the temperature goes up a few degrees. The wind coming off the lake by my house is intense. Our furnace has not stopped running for 3 days :(.

What concerns me about that is that not all parents/caregivers MAKE their kids bundle up properly..that makes me SO mad...you are only about 2 hrs from me (I'm up by Lake Ont.)and we always get the winds off the Lake...it really sucks at times because sometimes we'll get a system come in from Canada off lake ontario but also get nailed from a system coming from Buffalo and Lake Dreary..the schools were closed yesterday but open today? thats nuts..

Ok well I am here in Wausau Wisconsin, and school was cancelled yesterday 2/3/07 it was -16 and -30 to 40 with wind chill. Now today is was -18 but school wasnt cancelled because no wind chill. I guess it all depends on the people who make the desicions and stuff

Wow. Where I live, we get a few inches of snow or ice and everything shuts down. I don't really know what would happen around here if it got that cold without the ice/snow bit, but I have a feeling things would close, purly because our wimpy cars wouldn't start, or at least would be frozen closed!

they only missed 2 days actually which sucks for them (they've been whining about goin back and keep trying to con me into letting them stay home LOL) but its good for me....its funny cause when they get an unscheduled day off like that it really messes up my daily activities LOL next winter you can live here and I'll go to your house ;-)

i live in the tropics, so there's no chance of windchill here. In the city I used to live, schools are closed when it rains for two or three days. Floods get knee-high in some low areas but there are others that don't get flooded yet don't have school. The only business which doesn't come to a halt during heavy rains, thunderstorms, typhoons or floods are call centers which is owned and operated by multinationals. Our government is trying its damdedest not get blamed for the casualties or injuries brought on by any acts of God. I think this is good for everyone. It's not throughout the year that we have these kinds of weather. Let's stop until it goes. Defiance isn't always cool.

I grew up in Kentucky where they closed school for the first snowflake, but I moved to upper Michigan about 8 years ago. Talk about climate shock! They hardly ever close schools here. I know parents that will get up hours early in the morning so they can shovel/plow enough to get their kids out to school. This past weekend it was -40 here with wind chill. Bleh. Today we were celebrating because it got to positive numbers.

We go to school here. It can be -20 and snow to your knees. The only reason we wouldn't if the busses won't start. I am a cook at a high school. This is what they do get the kids there and then cancel at 11 am. this way they are paid from state. Plus they don't have to make up the day at the end of the year. The reason they make up the day is because they have to be in school x amount of days.
