People are breeding these dogs and calling them crazy names 1.cockapoo cocker spaniel and a poodle 2.St.Berdoodle St. Bernard and a poodle 3.Poggle beagle and a poodle 4.Jug jack russel and a pug 5. bassetoodle a basset hound and a poodle 6. Bogle Beagel and a boxer There are many many more I am sure. What I don't understand is they are a mixed dog so that makes them a mutt. How can people charge so much of them? Why has this become so popular?

There are two reasons that these breeds started. 1) Purebreds are so overbred that it's very, very difficult to continue breeding purebreds without defects occurring due to inbreeding. To expand the gene pool, professional breeders had to do something. These dogs are not mutts, they are entirely new breeds. You can't actually just breed together a poodle and a spaniel and have it an AKC registered Labradoodle. Both parents must be Labradoodles that meet set breed standards. Breeding together two types of dogs to create a new breed isn't anything new. A lot of popular dog breeds were created that way. People were just a lot more original with names. 2) backyard breeders leapt on this to make a few extra bucks for cheaper. A lot of those so called labradoodles or whatever are not breed standard and just slapped with that name so they can get the big bucks for them. Those are *not* actual breeds.

They are the latest fad. The reason it started is some people wanted the best qualities of two different breeds in one dog. (No single breed is perfect.) A good example is the labradoodle (labrador/poodle); a dog with the disposition of a lab with a nappy coat that doesn't shed. There are now 400 different "hybrids" recognized and the most popular one is the puggle (pug/beagle mix). They have their own registry - The American Canine Hybrid Club. They can ONLY be created using two purebreds and they do NOT breed true. Breeding 2 of the same hybrid does not result in matching puppies. These dogs are currently big business with some of the puppies bringing in 4 figure prices.

They're called designer dogs. I think a lot of people want them just to be trendy or new. But the one poster was right about the problems with purebreeds. They do have a lot of problems. That's why you need to be careful with any breed you choose.

I believe that they are called "hybrids". Some are bred because some of the "pure breed" bloodlines are not so pure any more so they went with mixing and matching. (as my husband calls it) Some are done out of pure dumb luck-oops my poodle that was in heat got out and met a St. Bernard. Others just see dollar signs, which is a total shame.

I have a maltese crossed with a poodle. I'm not worried about what that makes her - a maltoodle or pootese. She's just my little nina.

puaha..very funny indeed and quite hard to pronounce it in a proper way.Poodle sound fine for me but Jug jack and bassetoodle are just weird as it sound.i wonder what breed mixing that will lead to such name.Probably poeple prefer mix breed because the dogs are normally so much more cute than the origin breed.wild guessing ^^

The breeders breed the dogs for the different qualities in each breed. After so many generations of the breed they have came up with they can register them as that breed.

If you think that is strange, I read an article many years ago now that discussed how the Chinese are trying to genetically create a Tiger the size of a domesticated cat so that people could have a 'tiger cat' without them growing to full size. I remember thinking as a cat lover how cool it would be to own a Tiger that never grew larger than a regular cat BUT is it morally correct?

Well I have a Blabador (boxer laborador) and what we think is a Cockeranian (cocker spaniel and pomeranian). They're aren't designed dogs. They just happened that way but they turned out great!

It is crazy to name their dog by such names...I just name may dog 'T'. It is easy for my dog to remember his name, haha, so I named him 'T'. I think it is not a trend to name their dog like this, maybe just a few examples...

I'm not real sure how it is that they are making so much money off of making mutts. I have to say that I find many of these mixes are no more than I can get from a free add in the newspaper. I think it is ridiculous. Although puggles (pug + beagle) are pretty adorable.

That is quite insane, and frankly I have to say I'm disgusted. First miniature dogs, now this. Are there any more wild dogs left? When will it end?

People charge as much as they do because people are willing to pay. I like some of these mixed breeds because they blend traits I like but I wouldn't pay the designer prices.
